In the video of his arrest, Avelica-Gonzalez’s daughter Fatima can be heard crying inside the car. The footage shows her father outside the vehicle being handcuffed and placed in a black vehicle by immigration agents wearing jackets with the word “police” on the back. Avelica-Gonzalez was targeted for arrest, ICE officials said in a statement, because he has several prior criminal convictions, including a DUI conviction from 2009 and an outstanding order of removal dating back to 2014. It wasn't even discreet. What kind of sick message does this send? How does it even promote safety? It just seems inhumane. I dislike it profusely when they add the word "outstanding" for fines like these. Who's it outstanding for? It's like backwards sass that no one appreciates. On first read, I thought... it was kind of tacky/insensitive to do this by her daughter's school, but if he had actually committed a felony/felonies, then its not too ridiculous. Then we can argue about how ICE should prioritize deportations and arrests for immigrants that break laws. For example, a DUI vs like.. robbing a convenience store, breaking and entering, murder, arson, vs something like forgetting to pay something on time, smoking marjiuana, etc. What everyday crimes that are broken are worth deporting someone over in the first place? Is there any distinction at all with Trump? Will there be even less in the future? His crime was over twice as long ago as the statute of limitations, an American citizen wouldn't be arrested for this, so neither should this guy.
