Rachel Dolezal changes name & compares herself to Transgender People!

Being black is so much more than skin and I feel like she completely misses that. I can't come to the realization that I'm actually Chinese, when my heritage is from England. I could never be Chinese (even if I became a citizen of  China) It's culture and DNA.  

 

Switching genders and sexes is completely different than what she's feeling and it's disrespectful that she wants to compare it to that.

What is the difference between what she's saying and someone who is transgender, though? Both people are imagining they were born into something they're unhappy with because of ideas and social-constructs that humans have naturally over time made up to make things easier for life in general. I don't understand. It's a better life to live when you understand that everyone is and always will be judged for something and that anyone can say whatever they want to you and it doesn't change a thing because words are just sounds. It's nice to never get offended by unnecessary opinions!

I don't see why you all are getting mad?

If a person be truly believe they are another gender, what makes you think it is outside the realm of possibly that someone can't genuinely think they are another race?

Seems hypocritical of me.

It seems like she adopted the culture though? As if she identifies with it? She was CHEIF at the NAACP, don't you get that? This women wasn't doing this for attentions; she was actually working for the nation (association) for the advancement of colored people 

And your genetic gender is DNA

Transracial was already a well defined term before people started going 'Well, isn't this just like Trans people? Trans racial!" for one thing...

Gender and Race are not constructed the same way nor for the same reasons and the effects they have are different. It's not the same thing  It just shows that people claim to understand gender and race but don't know anything  

OT: The name change is a bit much. Liking black culture and feeling one with it does not make you African. I don't feel particularly bad for her

I find it all pretty fascinating and think Dolezal is worth studying from a psychological standpoint. What exactly does it mean to feel like a certain race? Is it only related to culture, or is it something more? I'm intrigued.

I have a cousin who all his life wanted to be white.  He hated being black, and only hung with & dated white people.  He hated all of us for being black & we couldn't stand him for treating us so badly & not wanting to be black.  We thought he was confused, a sellout, an oreo, etc.  But now as an adult, he is such a great person & has completely turned around his attitude.  He still only dates white & has mixed race children with his Caucasian wife.  They are all GREAT!  And we love them all now...  But I do have to wonder tho, did/does he have what she has??!

But unlike dolezal, your cousin can't just color his skin and wear a wig and pass as white. It's the white privilege she has that bothers me. 

Im having a hard time deciding where I stand on the issue too but let me know when there's a surgery that can change your race. I'm gonna need it when I interview for a new job

not in the way she is trying to sell it. someone on the first page mentioned adpoted children can go through something that can be described as trans-racial. but not the way rachel is trying to claim it, no.

 

michael jackson had vitiligo and was VERY PROUD TO BE BLACK. MJ never claimed to want to be white. and MJ had different psychological problems from rachel. they aren't even in the same venn diagram. and if there was something to help him through the loss of his pigment then thats what it was. it wasn't out of a need to be white.

If anyone is interested, her new book comes out in a few weeks. I think I am going to buy it, not to support her, but just because I find her fascinating, how someone thinks/feels this way about race, should be an interesting read.

I think that is just not feeling accepted or feeling lower because of his race, it is very unfortunate people feel like that. I am so happy he is doing better! You should watch the show This Is Us, it explores that theme. A white family adopts a black boy from the hospital and it explores how he has trouble accepting his color in a white neighborhood, very interesting.
