Women and children crossing together illegally into the United States could be separated by U.S. authorities under a proposal being considered by the Department of Homeland Security, according to three government officials.

Part of the reason for the proposal is to deter mothers from migrating to the United States with their children, said the officials, who have been briefed on the proposal.

The policy shift would allow the government to keep parents in custody while they contest deportation or wait for asylum hearings. Children would be put into protective custody with the Department of Health and Human Services, in the "least restrictive setting" until they can be taken into the care of a U.S. relative or state-sponsored guardian.

Currently, families contesting deportation or applying for asylum are generally released from detention quickly and allowed to remain in the United States until their cases are resolved. A federal appeals court ruling bars prolonged child detention.

President Donald Trump has called for ending "catch and release," in which migrants who cross illegally are freed to live in the United States while awaiting legal proceedings.

Two of the officials were briefed on the proposal at a Feb. 2 town hall for asylum officers by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services asylum chief John Lafferty.

A third DHS official said the department is actively considering separating women from their children but has not made a decision.

HHS and the White House did not respond to requests for comment.

Except slavery wasn't something you had the choice to be in or not...

However what they're trying to do is super wrong, we need to find a much better way of dealing with this.

Because it obviously doesn't convenience those who think they have a right to be here because they think they are American. I'm tired, so tired, that this country is going into disarray, that there's so many things to impeach Trump and his administration on. It's disgusting and I don't get what it'll take to make people realize how divisive Trump is being

It's the definition of frustrating when you do all you can to abide by the societal norms and expectations placed upon you, yet you do that and you are still not considered enough and are still treated lesser than. What Trump is doing is disuniting America and making so many power plays, but, the thing is, you can't run a democratic government like a private business. And the thing is, Trump isn't even running the US like a business, he's running straight into the ground by corroding its resources and its people. You get to a point where you think you're willing to do something drastic to just end it all, and then for half the country to tell you to suck it up and quit whining about it just adds salt to the wound

Tbh! Here in Canada its the same thing, everyone is immigrant descendant and they are talking about increasing immigrant numbers again

 

do u know why Canada, US, Britain and Australia have better economic growth than the pathetic 0% to 1% growth most of the rest of the developed world gets?

 

Its because we take in more immigrants and have a growing workforce and growing productive capacity. Also immigrangs also do jobs many people already born in these lands often wont do

 

Japan and much of Europe is in serious demographic problems and their economy is suffering for it

 

long term tho immigrants alone wont be enough. With ever falling birth rates and aging population we may need to look into raising retirement age. As much as that might piss some people off

How can they get away with this? Isn't there any international organization that can stop this?

Edit: i know there isn't - there are many Govts worldwide getting away with various atrocities because sovereignty and all, no external agency has the authority stop them. I'm just infuriated because of this injustice.
