Trump open to legal pathway for undocumented immigrants

WASHINGTON — President Trump signaled a new openness on Tuesday to granting legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants who have not committed serious crimes, and he then called on Congress to work with him on overhauling health care, changing the tax code and rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure and military.

Mr. Trump broke from his tough immigration stance in a conversation with news anchors just hours before he spoke and said he was open to a the kind of broad overhaul that many Republicans and some of his core supporters have derided as “amnesty.”

“The time is right for an immigration bill as long as there is compromise on both sides,” the president told the TV anchors at the White House, according to people present during the discussion. Those present requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the private meeting.

The idea is a sharp break from the broad crackdown on immigrants in the country illegally that Mr. Trump ordered in his first weeks in office and the hard-line positions embraced by his core supporters that helped sweep him into the White House.

But Mr. Trump made only glancing reference to a broad immigration overhaul in his speech, calling for a new “merit-based” system that only admits those able to support themselves financially, and never mentioning legalization of undocumented people. Overall, his speech held to the tough-on-immigration theme that marked his campaign.

So he wants to deport millions but not really.

And he wants to repeal and replace the ACA even though a lot of it will be placed back into the new healthcare act? :saladga:

And based on what I watched tonight, he was mainly trying to rebuild his character. Pointing out a widow of a service member is pure gold.

What a nice campaign rally this was.

Guess he had to do that to makeup for what he did to the Khan's during the election...  :madge:

It looks like the pressure from the people and from the media is actually affecting the white house!

Took a while, but maybe Trump and his team are beginning to realise that these issues are far more complicated and complex than Trump seemed to imply on the Campaign trail.

Things still are not perfect obviously, and he is still a right-wing president, but it seems like the reality is starting to hit home and Trump and his more kooky, extreme advisors are being reigned in a little bit.

I'd call this encouraging.

The President has the most power of any 'individual' but the entire government is a tangled web with many crooks and cranny's...This reminds me a lot of Obama's speech to congress really, just a different theme and topic.

How much he can get done remains to be seen.

I like how media and popular opinion impact his policy plans tho...

And his immigration message echo's the setiment of a lot of people that I know.

It's not the migrant workrers seeking a new life and employment that are the problem, but the rampant disrespect for American laws and culture that need to be deported back to wherever..

like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. My words give a clue, look inside to see whats true
