Hi since you seem smart can you explain how they are able to SEE into a place that is tens of thousands of years away? How is there a telescope to do that? How do they SEE these planets and know that they can have life?

This is sooooo exciting. I just wish we had a way to get there faster than 40 years. If we launched today at the speed of light it would take 40 years to get there..... 

That's not the challenge though. NASA is working on hyper fusion reactors that should be able to propulse a capsule at that speed, or faster even- the issue is having a capsule that can endure the stresses of that velocity and not disintegrate.

That's a good question. We can see the place because light has traveled to us from there. All sight is really is light bouncing off things and going into our eyes, which our brain then translates into an image that we see.

We can see the planets in that place because it's close enough that our telescopes can capture an image from the light. But we couldn't get such a good image from a place that is 1 million light years away, for instance, since it's so far telescopes could only pick out the light coming from it and not get an image.

Also, the light we do see from that area took 39 years to get to us (hence 39 light-years), so in reality we are seeing that solar system as it was 39 years ago and not as it is today.

This goes for every star, galaxy, celestial object, etc. out there. Because light must travel to us to see it, we are always seeing the stars and space as it was in the past. So in reality when you look up at the night sky or even the sun, you're literally looking into the past. Pretty cool!

:saladga: I've heard of this and it's crazy. But why the past? Does that mean objects in the sky appear to be moving slower in time due to their distance? For example, if we put a copy of Earth 100 lightyears away and looked at it through a microscope, we'd see what was happening in 1917? Or would we have to wait until 2117 to look and see 2017 replaying? :saladga:

I heard someone say that if someone 100 million lightyears away were to find Earth through a telescope, and could see what it's like on the surface, they would see dinosaurs to to it being so far away into the past (or however far Earth would have to be to see the past). :saladga: Is that true?

I could just be talking nonsense, but I think I understand a little. But I actually don't think the dinos would be seen. It would just be events happening now and in the future I think. Idk. :saladga:
