Digital sales mirrored each alot in the past because they were both different but equal branches of Popularity for a song but radio never really played a song more just because it sold better digitally. They have had their own way of deducing radio popularity. Applause was a bigger radio hit than Bad Romance on radio. That says alot right there. Now digital sales don't mirror Radio quite as much because digital sales are basically dying infont of our eyes. 30k a week gets you a top ten iTunes song. That doesn't give anccurate view of how the GP likes it's music. Streaming seems to mirror radio more now just because it is now how most of the GP consumes it's music. Not because radio looks at streaming for hits or songs to play on the radio. Maroon 5 for example are not big streaming artists but they are huge on the radio. Melanie Martinez entire career is based on streaming. When was the last time you heard her on the radio. Yeah I agree It is the biggest radio station but audience increase overall will mostly come from hundred of stations across the country playing it more regularly, not one, despite its size. To further your point: CTTR almost got no z100 spins and had like a 5M Al update. In Germany we say "Kleinvieh macht auch Mist", (literally meaning "Small animals also sh*t), figuratively meanining the sum of a many little things end up being bigger than than a lot from just one person. They're incredibly influential and that's why labels promote to them so heavily. It's less about their spins and more about the trickle down effect.
