We live in the culture of PC I swear 

As one of MANY gay males with effeminate qualities, feeling safe in the work place without fear of ridicule IS a pretty serious issue. Your time at work is a pretty big part of your life and it has a deep impact on the human psyche. That affects MILLIONS.

It goes deeper than that though. Did you know that there are many states that allow an employer to fire someone for being  LGBT? I unfortunately experinced this. I was laid off because my employer's  religious views and my "lifestyle" couldn't co-exist.

 Yes, this was in a sense "just a joke", but it goes deeper than that. This man felt that it would be appropriate to make this offensive "joke" on national television. And that it was a funny joke at that. If no one educates him, who's to say he wont go on to become a person of great power at some news station and affect the lives of others through his misguided words/actions. If we don't  start somewhere, we will never get anywhere.

I'm truly sorry to hear that and think it should be considered illegal. I'm just not sure if giving this guy's "joke" more attention is going to help with anything  it was stupid and inappropriate, yes. But how does this "educate" him? What is the tangible outcome of discussing it here with such passion? If there is none, isn't it just kind of a feel good, let's collectively bash him fest?

Would you not agree a mandatory emotinal intelligence session would be not only fair, but beneficial? That's all I'm saying, not suggesting he deserves to be banished to another realm or anything. 

Granted, there's not necessarily a tangible outcome through discussing this on an online forum, however I figured I'd put the forums to good use and discuss real world issues to gain a better perspective of the world around me through the opinions of others. 

To which, I have, greatly, therefore this forum has served its purpose.

How you feel doesn't/shouldn't limit someone else's freedom of speech. You can say it's offensive, because that is YOUR freedom of speech. We are leaning towards a society that gives more importance to feelings than morals and values. You are not entitled to society looking after your paranoias because you are not being directly physically threatened by this.

I agree in freedom of speech  to the fullest, I really do. If someone wants to go out onto the streets and protest and share thier thoughts/opinions on whatever they please, thats all fine and dandy, however as I stated, this is a work place matter. There for it is entitled to more delicate and in-depth tratment, rather than just slapping the old "freedom of speech sticker" and moving on. 

Lastly, as I told another member, I'm not suggesting this guy be banished to another realm or anything, just perhaps a mandatory emotinal intelligence session. That's all. Would you not agree that is not only fair, but beneficial?

Opinions have real effects on the world. Some opinions inform violence, hatred, discrimination, and general ignorance.

It's more than justified to oppose these opinions  You're still free to have them, but not free to deny people's right to criticize you 

Also... in general, people that don't know anything about X, their opinions should not be seen as more reliable or important those people that DO know things about X, esp. if they experience or know it personally or are experts on the subject. Straight people in general shouldn't comment on what Homophobia looks like TO gay people, that is condescending, the same way white people shouldn't be explaining what "real" racism is to black people, the same way men shouldn't explain what "real" sexism is to women  On top of coming from a place of arrogance and ignorance, its also just ****ing rude

Well, I'm gay (the gay kind of gay, I'm the gay even gay guys would bully for being gay) and I'm on this site, so maybe my comment isn't just washed off with this ''how can you decide if it's offensive if it isn't targeting you'' mess people always use to belittle the opinion of others.

 

I think it was a joke, a bad one, but a joke. And I think the joke got what it deserves, it got called out on live TV and that went viral.

Is this homophobia? Well, if this joke about a minority is homophobia, then I am a homophobe too.  And a racist. And a Nazi. And anti-German. And sexist. And transphobic. And the list goes on. 

Is that guy is homophobe (and I think we use that term too loosely.)? Maybe, but I can't and won't judge that, especially based on a bad joke he got called out for after thinking it's funny for at least 30 years.  

Is this bullying? Really? That's in question? If making one joke about one of your friends/family members/coworkers makes you a bully, then we all are bullies. And I (after being a victim of bullying for most part of my life, 5 years straight in school) actually feel offended by people thinking this is bullying. If my bullies were like that it would have saved many therapy sessions and many many tears over the years.

It just seemed awkward but like I said I really didn't get it.

I find I have to explain item #2 all the time, with so much misinformation being spread out there.

A couple African-American sociology professors, around 30 years ago, came up with a new definition for the word 'racism', and it seems to have become very popular among a certain demographic.

This is the well-known "black people can't be racist because racism describes a system of disadvantage based on race and black people don't stand to benefit from such a system".

And so you see people 'correcting' others all the time. They're wrong to do so. Theirs is just one definition of the word 'racism'. It's not the original definition, and it's not the definition that the public at large accepts.

You can't 'correct' someone when they are using an existing word in the accepted manner. If you create a new definition for a word, that's great, but you are using the same word to describe different concepts. Both people are correct.
