I didn't even know about that until someone pointed it out. "People are sick of hearing about politics" is an age old phrase to destroy any sense of speech, rebellion and democracy. I call bull because whether or not politics is too in our faces, we still depend on it at the end of the day. Well, it's what the entire song's about, I hardly think the message is subtle. If you really switched off when you heard the chorus, maybe you wouldn't hear it there but the verses tell you all you need to know. And it is a fact - people are getting sick of hearing about politics. Everyone I know is saying it. People don't want to hear political messages in songs right now, as evidenced by what's been hits for the last year. People just want to switch off and have fun with music right now, it's providing the perfect escapism. Pop is usually an escapism genre so to hear political messages in it is very off-putting to some, especially young pop fans who want to hear fun songs. I think the song's too serious for young fans, not a big enough evolution for her older fans. I can think of no other reason why it's struggling to sell so much. LastNight 5,935
While I agree that people are probably craving escapism in music I hardly think this song smacks you over the head with a political message. I've only listened to it a couple of times and I couldn't tell you any of the lyrics other than a couple from the chorus, so I personally wouldn't say a political message in the song is immediately obvious, especially at a casual listen. For this reason I doubt that that is what is preventing the song from blowing up in its first few days. It's an interesting idea though. I agree that music is a great tool for escapism and can transport you somewhere else, but should it just be that? Should music, and pop music specifically, just be an escape or should it reflect what's going on in the world? A political message (which I'm yet to find because I haven't listened to in it a couple of days, nor have I read the lyrics) in this song is well hidden behind some great production and a catchy melody so I would actually say that's commendable; you have the catchy pop music that's escapist and something deeper hidden within it. I'm just speaking from a first time, casual listener stand point. I would think that to be turned off by the lyrical content you would have had to listen to the song several times already, meaning you would've streamed it more or already purchased it. I don't know why it's not doing as well as you would expect from Katy Perry, although I do think it's a bit of a ridiculous discussion. If something doesn't blow up the charts straight away it's dismissed, called a flop on social media and a 'buzz single' by the record label. Give it a chance. Everything is so quick to be pushed aside these days. Having said that, I think Katy is an artist that needs a good chunk of pre-promotion. The surprise release tactic didn't work for Rise and CTTR only really had a week of hype beforehand and even then it didn't seem like massive hype. I also feel a bit conflicted and maybe contradictory. I like Katy and I think the constant chart analysis is tiresome but there is a little, twisted part of me that enjoys that the song is not slaying. Not because I want Katy herself to be "unsuccessful" but because I'm still a bit bitter about Katy being revered by the media and stans as the perfect example of a pop star with her consistent chart success, while Gaga was dragged to the pits because her sales slipped from phenomenal to moderate. It was an ugly time then and I don't want to feed into it this time around but, like I said, I can't help but smirk a little.
