It's such a struggle. Just look at a few of Lorde's performances... Oh I know it's a struggle, studio can make anything sound great. Breathiness is actually one of my major issues I'm trying to eliminate in vocal coaching because it really does lead you to "push" and strain your voice in the upper registers. It's an incredibly unreliable technique to reach your upper register because everything can collapse like a card house within seconds and you go from "sexy" to "dying moose" real quick. Countless female vocalists are relying on the register breaking for effect, sometimes it works (Sia and Adele being prime examples), but it's a bit tired at the point.
