Trump claims terror attacks in Europe are going unreported

President Donald Trump on Monday accused the news media of ignoring attacks by Islamist militants in Europe.

Trump, who has made defeating Islamic State a core goal of his presidency, did not specify which attacks were going unreported, which news media organizations were ignoring them, or offer any details to support his claims.

"All over Europe, it's happening. It's gotten to a point where it's not even being reported," he told a group of about 300 U.S. troops at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida.

"And, in many cases, the very, very dishonest press doesn't want to report it. They have their reasons, and you understand that," he added, without saying what those reasons were.

The White House later released a list of 78 attacks around the world from September 2014 to December 2016.

"Networks are not devoting to each of them the same level of coverage they once did," a White House official said. "This cannot be allowed to become the 'new normal.'"It was Trump's latest salvo against the news media, a favorite target for derision that he says broadly underestimated his chances during the presidential campaign. He has kept up the attacks since his Jan. 20 inauguration.

Trump at one point cited attacks in the French cities of Paris and Nice, which were widely covered. More than 230 people have died in France alone in the past two years at the hands of attackers allied to Islamic State.

Hey Trump, let's focus on the thousands of LGBTQ who been targeted by terrorists here in the USA....

There's also large groups of Muslims being slaughtered in other Eastern Asian countries, but that obviously surpasses the intellect of Trump.

Just as striking was what the list excluded: attacks targeting Muslims, the overwhelming majority of Islamist terrorism victims.

It does not mention, for instance, a set of suicide bombings in Beirut that killed dozens in November 2015 or the wave of Boko Haram attacks across northern Nigeria, which are among the world’s deadliest.

Though there have been many attacks in Kabul, the list mentions only one: a June 2016 bombing that killed Nepalese and Indian security contractors. The list describes the target as “a bus carrying Canadian Embassy guards,” which is correct but in keeping with the document’s emphasis on Western targets that is sometimes misleadingly narrow.

Prominent attacks committed by non-Muslims are also conspicuously omitted. In June 2015, Dylann S. Roof opened fire in a predominantly black church in Charleston, S.C., killing nine. That November, Robert L. Dear Jr. killed three at a Planned Parenthood office in Colorado Springs.

Right-wing violence has been rising in the United States, according to a recent report by the New America Foundation, and has at some points claimed more lives than Islamist attacks within the country.

Critics say the White House’s list, by focusing on a significant but narrow slice of terrorism, risks feeding into perceptions that the administration is seeking to target Muslims with other policies, particularly its immigration restrictions against Muslim-majority countries.
