HMV to close all stores in Canada

HMV is the largest music retailer in Canada. There is also HMV around the world, largest markets being in the U.K. and Hong Kong.

Amongst sliding physical sales and the rise of digital music streaming, HMV Canada has been faced with some hard times in recent years, and they may soon be getting much worse.

The continuous shift away from purchasing compact discs in favour of streaming has hurt HMV Canada, with the court filings also revealing that the chain has been losing money since 2013. At the end of 2016, its annual sales dropped from $266 million to $193 million.

According to legal documents obtained by the CBC, all remaining stores in Canada must cease operations by April 30. The majority of HMV Canada's head office staff has been laid off, and the company owes its major suppliers, which include music labels and media studios, a reported $56 million as of December 31.

Not sure if "Economy" is the best tag - this is more of a trends/lifestyle topic of discussion but can easily be a topic on the business of music and where it's headed.

Physical album sales will definitely drop in Canada as a result of this. What do you think about this trend? What other digital trends are gaining traction which will cause other "traditional" stores to soon cease to exist?

Starbucks

In Indonesia, there was a large music retailer named Disc Tarra. On it's era, it has sooooo much stores. But now, there's only 8 stores in Jakarta (only), and one in my hometown. Poor physical release :toofunny::rip:

This is making me f*cking mad. I love HMV so much, and I always go there to buy music. The deals are great and they have things other retailers don't have.

i like streaming but what I do is listen to it there and go buy the physical album after. HMV is my go-to.

i'm so f*cking pissed..

HMV Megastore Ste-Catherine, HMV Dix30, and HMV St-Bruno, I'll f*cking miss you

They closed my local HMV's in the UK a couple years ago. It's a shame because it means a lot of redundancy but it is what it is. Technology changes :oprah:

They maintain now because of iShop but now that official Apple stores made an entry to Mexico, Mixup will be done in a few years :emma:
