He'd probably loose his job had he said anything remotely similar about any other minority, but we have decided as a culture that targeting vegans with abuse is totally acceptable. You can inform other people that do eat meat about how it's hurtful to animals and in your opinion shouldn't be done. That's the most you can do. If the issue is not important enough to that person that makes them give up eating meat than it's their choice. You can't shun people out because of that.
