Here is the thing, I actually agree that Taiwan should be considered an independent state, but what does this approach by Trump achieve?

All Trump is doing is pissing off a major trading partner and is no doubt just going to hurt the U.S and China  It's just stupid - it's not helpful for anyone. The last thing the U.S wants is a trade war with China - that doesn't help the U.S, it doesn't help China, it doesn't help liberate Taiwan. That's really not going to be pretty for anyone...

It's a little more complex, Taiwan is fully self-governed but The People's Republic of China still claims Taiwan as part of it's territory. China has refused diplomatic relations with any country that recognizes Taiwan as an independent state and therefore most international organizations either refuse it membership or allow it to participate only as a non-state actor.

There are some unofficial ties and de facto embassies and consulates between Taiwan and some other states, but it's still kinda held back by China. I think, eventually, Taiwan will be completely separate and recognised as an independent state but as of now China is still gripping Taiwan by its fingernails.

Exactly.

It's not that dems don't want Taiwan to be recognized as an independent state, its just that they realize that we can't save the world all at once  Trump is just ignorant.
