Obama ends visa-free residency for Cubans

President Barack Obama has ended the longstanding policy that grants residency to Cubans who arrive in the US without visas.

The 20-year-old policy allows Cuban migrants who reach US soil to become legal permanent residents after a year.

In exchange, Havana has agreed to start accepting Cubans who are turned away or deported from the US.

Many Cubans in the US say Washington is rewarding a regime which has failed to address human rights concerns.

But President Obama is trying to continue the thawing of relations with Cuba in his final days of office.

He said: "With this change we will continue to welcome Cubans as we welcome immigrants from other nations, consistent with our laws."

So this is good because Cubans view the free residency after a year thing as an affront to them and we are trying to move towards a better relationship? Why would Havana (which is still Cuba?) be better for them?

Thinking of this from an entirely humanitarian perspective. Obv, the idea that people can just flee their countries and get citizenship in ours with no downside (other than risking their lives :laughga: ) is slightly problematic at least from a legal, enforcing standpoint.

Well they should give it to Venezuelans now :green:

This is exactly why I am glad Obama did this. The suffering and deaths that are currently happening in Venezuela is horrible and yet only Cubans had this wet foot dry foot law. We don't give it to North Koreans. We don't give it to Syrians. It will be interesting to see if Trump reinstates this just because most Cubans vote Republican. Is he really goibg to cherry pick which countries have it worse. The Cubans can still apply for political asylum but it won't be a fast paced citizenship like it was in the past. The money spent on wet foot dry foot was crazy too. They were pretty much given an $800 check by the end of the week.

Also this is the clearest example of unvetted open border policy and it's one Republicans like?:oprah:

On the other hand, no R migrants coming in.

I don't know how many Cubans there actually are in the US, though :rip: but I think it's smart politics from Obama's side. Either Trump shows he doesn't take the biggest reason he was voted in seriously (migration, white identity politics), or Republicans lose support from the Cuban community. This is a nice dilemma for Republicans, especially Trump.
