It extended healthcare to young adults- they could stay under their parents' plan until they were 26. It gave affordable healthcare options to those who were working part time, or two part time jobs or who worked for themselves. It gave healthcare to millions of people who had lost insurance due to preexisting conditions. (Cancer, heart issues, diabetes, even pregnancy) It gave healthcare options to those who worked for companies that didn't offer healthcare. It gave preventative care to millions. Insurers must now cover a host of wellness exams and screenings, including annual physicals, mammograms and tests for cholesterol and diabetes. It's supposed to make it much easier (and in most cases cheaper) for anyone to get an insurance plan. They even set up an online formular, to make it even easier, but on launch there were a lot of issues. Servers broke down and in some cases the registration wouldn't complete at all. But those issues where fixed pretty quickly. Take a look at Europe, especially in the UK or Germany, where there are two types of health insurance: mandatory, public-owned insurance or privately owned (you need to insure yourself). There are no real differences between the two, privately-owned may be a little less expensive, but quality-wise, both are on the same (high) level. Insurance companies (public and private) will cover most (or all) of the costs for let's say a stay at the hospital and may heavily discount medical products for you.
