The history of Gaga;s popularity in your country

Hello guys!!!

I recently came up with this kind of question as I had been deeply thinking about how ubiquitous and pervasive Gaga used to be in Poland. Back in 2009 I was not keeping track of what was popular in music, actually I did not listen to pop music at all. But somehow I knew who Lady Gaga was as everyone kept talking about her, including my mom and dad.

As I later found out, Just Dance and Poker face were smashes and are still being played on Polish radios. Also Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) was quite a considerable hit and all of my friends know this tune. Lovegame is widely known amongs my peers (I am 23) and Paparazzi was simply massive.

Then Bad Romance came out and the whole Gaga craze just started to blossom. It may have peaked at number 3 but to my mind it is her greatest and most memorable song in the hearts of Polish people. She was the most successful and best selling singer in Poland in 2010. Telephone was as huge as the first single from The Fame Monster but it was the song "Alejandro" that had occupied the number one spot on Polish charts for 5 consecutive weeks. The Fame Monster was the best selling album of the year. Gaga also toured "Fame Monster Tour" in Poland in 2010 and the people  even made her cry and she promised to come back with her next tour but sadly she went back on the promise ,which is sad. Poland has 35 million inhabitants and we love to go out and have fun and she would have had a sold out show for sure just like Rihanna that has been coming to Poland with her every tour.

I remember February 11th and the Polish radio premiere was set at 12 P.M. and I had my last classes till 12.10 that is why I asked my grandma to write me an excuse note so I could leave classes 20 minutes earlier just to be able to listen to Gaga's upcoming single. We listened to it in her car, my grandma did not pay much attention to the song but I was instantly in love with Gaga's new jam. Radio stations went gaga over Gaga and upon the day of its premiere, they played the song every freaking hour. Judas arrived two months later and turned out to be a huge radio hit (everyone I know knows the song!!!) It peaked at number 3.Poland is a catholic country but people paid no mind to the whole controversy, they just focused on good music she delivered. The Edge Of Glory is played on the radio to this day ,so that means it did pretty well and the audience enjoyed this masterpiece but suddenly THINGS CHANGED AND THE TABLES TURNED

I noticed many people (my peers and friends) saying Gaga had become predictable and they also thought she would do anything in order to garner attention. Not only did they state they were tired of her bizarre style ,but also they dared to believe her music had become repetitive and not as fun as before.

You And I was not played at all but Marry The Night was a popular song and I heard it more that Applause, speaking of which peaked at number 7 and people seemed to appreciate the track. I only heard "Do What U Want" three times on the radio including her remix with Christina. Gaga has not been frequently played and listened to in Poland ever since. GUY was paid dust and so was "Perfect Illusion" which was only played on Radio Eska who was actually the first radio station to have awarded Gaga.

The songs that are still being played and you can hear them driving your car are: Just Dance, Poker Face. Paparazzi, Bad Romance, The Edge of Glory.

The Fame (The Fame Monster)-1

Born This Way-3

ARTPOP-8

JOANNE-10

I lived in Spain back then and one of the most important news program made a coverage of her being the new thing in music. It was so cute I remember some of the footage was from a very small concert she did, baby girl losing her tits to Just Dance with her disco stick

She was popular all throughout the TF and TFM era. Even songs like Lovegame, Paparazzi and Alejandro felt like smashes. Somewhere between TFM and BTW people lost interest in her. Most of my friends felt BTW/Judas/Alejandro were too religious/Christian. Judas got some people interested again... but ever since BTW she has failed to get a top 10 hit here. Applause was well-known but radio never played it, DWUW wasn't, PI wasn't. Some friends like PI and MR but the sales are depressing. TMB and BTWB both sold out two dates. artRAVE almost sold out one date. I wonder how the Joanne Ball would do :rip:

Just Dance was massive! It took like half a year to eventually reach the #1 spot on our charts for 3 weeks, Poker Face did the same but was like 2 months behind in schedule, Poker Face was the biggest song of the century here for a while, and she was the it girl teens loved her, my parents loved her, my nan loved her but I didn't like her at the time, then paparazzi was a massive summer hit and is still a regular on radios today along with just dance and poker face, Lovegame came in early autumn here after failing to chart well when it was released before paparazzi, Gaga was so big that Lovegame became a bit of a hit here with no radio play before night time because of its controversial lyrics.

Bad Romance came at the end of 2009 and ra ra gaga became our national anthem for a year, the song got to #1 in December 2009 before slipping away from the top spot to only return again in January 2010! This was an amazing feat, and in the early months of 2010 the whole of the UK was gaga crazy she was totally inescapable, telephone was also massive here, it was another dance pop gaga song that the GP craved so much! Telephone also got to #1 for 2 weeks here, Alejandro was a big summer hit 2010 here peaking at #7 but getting so much radio play an longevity it is easily one of her classics here.

Born This Way peaked at #3 the message was relevant but the sound was considered un cool, Gaga had moved from.being cool to being a legend at this point who wanted to use her mega stardom to spread important messages, Judas peaked at #8 and got a tiny bit of radio play I remember because she was pop music she was the hit churning machine, the edge of glory was like such a massive hit, one of the classics here in England for sure it spent like a whole year in the charts and kept gaga's place as the world's biggest pop star firmly sealed.

and then 2012 onwards the only radio hit she has had was dwuw.

Italy has always had a strange relationship with Gaga's music... Poker Face was a massive hit and so was Paparazzi

Spoiler

that was her very first interview and the host was (and still is a mess):awkney:

But Bad Romance was the actual game changer. It was used in a television ad for a mobile phone company (a very popular one) and they basically aired the commercial something like two or three times in an hour. I think this was the first one but there were several more (with the same model - who was and still is very popular :lolga:

In 2010 Gaga was very popular but people kept making jokes about her name or the fact that she had a d*ck :cryga: (everybody knew po-po-po-poker face and rah rah rahahah). Alejandro was a massive hit during the summer and a very important radio station still uses the instrumental as an intro for one of their segments.

2011 was still a great year (I think at the time Gaga was the biggest pop star in the world and Italy recognized that) but the most successfull singles were TEOG and You And I (that's because Italians really love summer hits). Both are still being aired in radio and tv alongside Alejandro, Paparazzi/Poker Face and BR.

During the ARTPOP Era Italy had DWUW as a massive hit (it still is the most aired Gaga song in italian radios) and with Joanne people are starting to really pay attention to Million Reasons (currently #6 on iTunes Italy) and the video is regularly on television.

CONCLUSION: Italy likes Gaga's songs but most people still think she's a man :madge: BUT they seem to appreciate the toned down version of Gaga in Joanne
