She did an interview with Ryan Seacrest at about 10:35 where her in-ear was very choppy. She could barely hear Ryan. Mariah says that it's not working and gets several new in ear pieces - all don't work and gets promised that it'll work when she's on stage. It’s now four minutes to showtime. She says, “I hear nothing in my ears, my ears are dead.” The other stage manager says, “It will work right when we go live.” Then things start to get chaotic. They start counting her down — four minutes, three minutes. Mariah: “I can’t hear.” Them: “You’re gonna hear when it goes live — two minutes!” So, right when it goes live, she can’t hear anything. So she pulls them out of the ear because if the artist keeps them in their ears then all she hears is silence. In a Conversation with Mark Shimmel after the Drama: After the show it got confirmed that the in-ears weren't working and she got told she should've winged it (Stella response was 'Are you on glue?'). They didn't want to cut the part out of the West Coast airing and would rather have a Viral moment. Stella didn't want to release a joint Statement with the Production Company. Mariah is ignoring the whole nonsense about the Performance and Stella thinks they should've cut to commercial when the mess happened. And lastly, a Quote from Stella about the Lipsyncing thing: No. It’s not lip-syncing. Lip-syncing is when people don’t sing at all. This is what people should understand. Every artist sings to a track, especially in circumstances like that when it’s really loud and impossible to have a great musical performance. You’re not singing at the Philharmonic. Every artist who goes out there sings to tracks. What Mariah was doing was singing to tracks. What you heard on the second song, “Emotions,” was her going to sing it live. I also agree with Stella's statement. She wasn't lip syncing during Emotions, if she was, then you'd hear the vocals during the track—which you obviously don't. Also, I'm sure it's very difficult to just sing it live when a malfunction like that has occurred. The first verse of Emotions is very challenging vocally because it starts with low notes from the third octave and quickly goes to the fifth octave.
