not her fault tho

It's not her fault she released a single with an alleged rapist, filmed a video with a guy accused of rape & sexual assault, filmed a video about being raped/fked with scenes a la p0rn movies, crying around about the media backlash. It's also not her fault people were put off when she announced ARTPOP as bringing ART into POP while she delivered an album with no more than 5 songs that really sound experimental, used artists' name to promote the album while their work on the album was almost non-existant, hyped an APP that never happened/delivered anything, hyped the first flying dress in the world only to bash it a few years later. Do you want more 'not her fault' s? :emma:

In my honest opinion, ARTPOP "flopped" because it wasn't very good compared to her previous work. It sounded like watered down Gaga and that's not something Gaga can put out. ARTPOP is a decent enough pop album but everyone expects better of her.

I also think that BTW was one of the reasons that ARTPOP flopped. During her peak era she released an album whose most songs were good only in piano or live (Hair, Americano, You and I). If ARTPOP (pure pop record) was released as her follow-up to TFM it would have been even bigger than BTW. The only tracks I still listen off BTW are the titletrack and MTN.

1 BTW is the reason why ARTPOP flopped :unicorn:

2 ARTPOP is the reason why Joanne has underperformed

3 Except ARTPOP did not flop, and Joanne is not underperforming :usrs:

because 2013 was when R&B and other genres started to become more popular but gaga was still making synth-pop :classy:

Because the kind of music she made was already dated in 2013 plus she took a break and new artists arrived in that year that took her spotlight also troy left her and her team of yes sayers was just trash

They're still around, stronger than ever...

You realize you and I was like twice as big as Judas

Y&I was big in the US but not here in the U.K., Judas was successful, my mates still like it. Maybe Americans are more religious or something because it didn't receive much backlash here

I wouldn't call ARTPOP a "flop", I don't get Monsters' obsession with that word and deeming everything that isn't a number one a "flop" and constantly referring to someone who is supposed to be their fave/idol as a "flop", but I think with ARTPOP, people were expecting a reinvention from Gaga, a new sound, a new image and remember Applause did fairly well, and Gaga did do a refined more natural look to debut the video on GMA, but once everyone kept saying "we want old Gaga", etc, and because of expectation, she went back to the outrageous looks and redid a lot of things we saw already from her, it was basically a struggle to maintain what people expected of her. To be outrageous, crazy, continue the facade of avant garde wild outfits and music. But now with Joanne, she's thrown that away, she has the confidence to be herself, and still what do people do? Complain and say we want the old Gaga, in a way I'm glad she's not delivering those other looks right now, there is a time and place, and after listening to Joanne, I don't honestly think this is the time or the album to deliver those wild looks and videos. It would not suit the music, the themes, the messages of the album. If Gaga creates new music that does suit those avant garde looks, that is when they'll return, right now, it's not the right time. In a way, ARTPOP was forced, the images, the videos, the "wackiness", the fan demand for Gaga to be "crazy", the demand from management and label, etc.

I personally think ARTPOP was a reductive copy of Born This Way

Queen of copying nothing but her own works of art:trollga:

i couldn't disagree more lol if anything BTW was a copy of TFM, in fact Judas was intentionally made based on the same song structure as Bad Romance and the album had at least one TFM outtake. Not that it's a bad thing that the two albums were similar, cause it worked at the time.

ARTPOP is hardly similar to any of her work. Although in essence it is the peak of the "crazy gaga" as we knew her back then it's also very different, all the way down to the contrasting color scheme choices and minimalistic props.

Born This Way sold that amount of copies (700k + Amazon discount sales) because it was the post-TFM album. Everyone wanted to see what Gaga would do next and of course, the insane amount of promo all over the world. The album cover was on subways, billboards, etc. It was just one of the most anticipated albums at that time.

ARTPOP sold a little less than that because the hype was over, the music was not AS good as her past albums and the controversy probably made people not care about Gaga at that time.

All of this + Streaming getting bigger every year.
