Another thread about the MR video. We talked this subject to death. It is really time to move past it.

This is a forum. The purpose of a forum is to discuss things. These are discussion boards. I will never understand the argument that we've discussed something too many times. Being as this is a Lady Gaga forum, and she just released a new music video, why would people not discuss it? Why would we "move past it"?

Additionally, the OP was well-written and constructive. Not like he/she was ragging on Gaga or posting about useless crap.

seems to me like we are now trying to justify things by saying there's some genius plan with a deep meaning behind it...

It's not basic at all. It's one of her best. It did not need a circus. I find it basic probably to people who aren't very emotional and cannot completely connect to the song.

NOT the avant garde crap angle again. Please please quote me an actual statement done here in GGD that stated they wanted her to change outfits 8-9 times wearing weird as **** outfits. Please.

I've said it before, but any problem I have with the video is not that it's simple, but that it was poorly directed. I actually like the concept of going behind the mask and behind the scenes, but the way it was executed was poorly conceived and unnecessarily confusing.

Although the link they make between PI and MR works conceptually, I think MR would have been better as a stand alone video. The problem they faced with linking the two is that Gaga was alone, stranded in the desert, broken by the pressures of life. They have to solve the problem of getting her out of the desert and to this video shoot to get her hair and makeup done. They didn't properly resolve that imo.

Firstly, it was confusing. Gaga has just had this breakdown in the desert over the pressures of her everyday life in the spotlight - menacing music starts and 3 SUVs appear. That straight away makes me think she is being taken and forced back to work. There is more creepy music as she enters the studio to get her makeup done. It wasn't until halfway through the video that it was clear that there were people in the SUV's helping her and comforting her. If this was done on purpose, to mislead the audience into thinking they had taken her, so they could pull a twist later when they reveal her team running out of the SUV's to comfort her then it still seems unnecessarily convoluted to me, but fine.

The main problem though is that there is this complete disconnect between the first scenes of Gaga lying in the desert after PI and the scene of her arriving to get her hair and makeup done. It's like it no longer matters... She just escaped the pressures of her life, ran away to the desert, had a breakdown, seemed to be there day and night, 3 SUVs came to find her, brought her to this studio and there is just nothing  No acknowledgment of what just came before, no reactions, just Gaga crying at her makeup table surrounded by this team of busy people ignoring her. It was uncomfortable and confusing, and not in a good way, it was just left unresolved.

You could say it was resolved more than halfway through the video when we saw more scenes of her at the desert but that's far too late. She needs to figure out a way to allow one music video to resolve itself before moving on to another music video with it's own problems and central question. By continuing from where PI left off she was suddenly faced with all these problems - PI was a story in itself, but by continuing it on Gaga needed to consider the emotional state she was in at the end of the PI video and the location.

If the video was self contained and she had been able to make a music video surrounded around the gift that would have worked, we would have a clear central question throughout. What's in the box? Maybe she doesn't have time to open the box as she has to get her hair and makeup done and go to this videoshoot. We see her get worn down as the days go on and the various pressures of her everyday life get to her. Her smiles are forced as she has to smile for the camera, for the paparazzi outside, to be strong for her fans. When by herself though she looks sad and defeated. When she finally gets to her apartment she opens the gift, sees the letter and the rosary and she genuinely smiles for the first time by herself.

That was literally just from the top of my head, so it's not perfect, but that was just a way for me to show how this could have been a simple, personal, emotional video that's not so goddamn confusing and convoluted. It basically tells the same story, just in a way that's easier to follow, one question "What's in the box?" vs "What's happening to her?, Are those SUV's taking her?, Why isn't anybody acknowledging that she just ran away?", "How did they know she was there?", "What's in the box?".....

That's genuinely my only problem with the video, although it is a major problem for me. Simple music videos can be great - this video had too much to do, it was actually kinda overambitious in the way they wanted to link the videos. It makes me a little nervous for the rest of the linked music videos but I'll wait and see, I like the concept so if it is executed well then brilliant.

Basic is all fine and dandy. Connect to the GP all you need sis....but that cringe worthy acting isn't basic. It's just f*cking cringe worthy. Straight up

I've tried so many times to figure out what happened.

She just got lazy and didn't care. Million Reasons wasn't the song she wanted to be the single. It's obvious she was gunning for A-Yo. The "Love you sis" was thrown in last minute. The Rosary was thrown in last minute. The stupid acting was all thrown together and they legit filmed those black and white portions on regular camera. The angles are sh*t. The acting is sh*t. For god sakes her cheek injections haven't even settled in yet.

There was no new filming. There were no new scenes. It was rushed and any fan can tell.

She could have had a full-video of her playing the piano and lipsynching to the song, with hundreds of angles from whatever angle you can imagine, and it wouldn't have been "basic".

lmao She had a month and a half :rip:

I have total confidence in Gaga that she could spend 3 days on something and make it a masterpiece. Time has nothing to do with it. It was the amount and effort and care that went into it. MR was already falling on the charts and they knew it didn't matter what they put out. It was saving face at this point so we didn't end up with another Venus / DWUW mess.

You can't watch those scenes and say with an honest face that that acting is anything other contrived and forced.

My big questions is who is she trying to fool?

Does she really mean to tell us that the same girl who swallowed a rosary in a latex outfit with an upside down cross on it is the same girl who clutches a rosary with "I love you sis" written on it? Since when did natali have anything to do with this?

They threw together what they already had with an attempt at making something "personal"

I'm all for her being personal and toned down; showing us BTS footage or her dealing with the industry taking advantage of her...Whatever she feels the need to put out I'm all for. I don't even mind the re use of the apple commercial.

It's the sheer lack of effort that gets me the most. They filmed 30 seconds worth of new material...and its cringe worth to sit threw. Someone just didn't care enough.

If there weren't abstract costumes, if it was just her in a pink suit at the piano, it still would have been basic TBH
