I love Gaga, first of all.

She's such an amazing artist and I really do respect everything she does music wise.

But five (solo) albums in, there's something that just bugs me.

I understand she loves pop music, I really do. She started off in the business with it, and with every album she makes sure to have it be exactly that, pop music. She mixes up certain genres with the pop and it's always something new too, but it's always primarily pop. And honestly, I'm a bit tired of it.

I understand most of her fans are here for pop music, but when will she stop? She's such a diverse artist, and we all know she'd die to make a non-pop album. It's not like I'm trying to push her away from being who she is.

Maybe I'm just thinking like this because I read an article about A-YO. It was on a Country music website, and the article was about how people were calling it country (primarily monsters) and why it wasn't. I read the comments and people agreed. They were tired of people labeling pop music as genres they weren't (while also praising Gaga for her jazz, ha longetivity).

I think if Gaga really wants to grow as an artist, and even grow her fanbase, she has to go all out next time. Can you imagine a rock album, and not that pop-rock stuff like Yoü and I or Diamond Heart. Pure, classic rock. Or even a disco album? Metal?

What are your thoughts?

I kind of agree!

I feel like Gaga needs to either go full out and embrace a new genre with every album and forgo pop influences OR stick to making killer pop music that makes no apologies about being pop.

She shines when she's making strictly pop music (The Fame / Monster) but also kills it when she's doing a different genre (Cheek To Cheek). The awkward hybrid of pop and other genres on ARTPOP, for example, are really marmite; some people love it and some people hate it.

In for a Beatles/Bowie influenced rock album. Imagine an album full of Just Another Day kind of songs. Maybe add some Blues influences too

Exactly!

I think she's trying to hard to please everyone. If she makes a pop-____ album the chances of anyone purely enjoying it is slim, as opposed to her going all out, which of course a certain group will favor more than another.

I mean if she delivers with a really good rock album, she'd still be a force in music. I don't mind as long as the material is good.

Maybe... I am excited that she is interested in different genres, but I'll always love her for pop. If she is happy with her music, I'll be happy.

I mean, pop is a weird genre that isn't really defined by something specific. Pop can sometimes be a kind of pseudo-genre, but it can also be an all encompassing term to signify music that's popular on radios

As for labeling A-YO country or not, it's country influenced, I would go so far as to say country-pop. If the Queen of Being Scottish But Slaying American Charts Sheena Easton can do pop and country that transcends into one another, so can Gaga. Gaga and country music both bear stigmas that the intended audiences disagree on, and that's probably why they don't consider country, per se, but it's country-pop whether one wants to admit it or not. Same with John Wayne, except John Wayne has very huge honky tonk influences and is more country than pop really, but homophobia and the Gaga curse and all that jazz tbh :madge:

Basically, what I'm saying is that she can still make pop with it being considered something else at the same time. I would be here for something genre specific though, something that isn't disco, dance, or metal. Rock, country, and something organic since I know Gaga would never go down a Björk-esque path are what I wouldn't mind Gaga partaking in

Yes. I don't really care for a lot of pop in general, that's just my taste, so I would love for rock or something. I can't wait for C3C.

I prefer pop like TF and TFM, but I'm open to different genres. However, I'm not a big fan of the current direction she's heading at.

Rock and disco would be amazing

I would love her to do a heavy metal or rock album, or even EDM or original jazz or anything purely one genre, but I also respect her being a pop star. I guess she simply doesn't want to limit herself therefor pop is the perfect umbrella for her. I have no doubt she will delve more into one genre in the future but I think it will be a while.

Also musical genres are very hard to lable these days. I think that even if she did make a true rock album, it would still be classified as pop because of her past.

According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch

I see what you're saying. I mean, when I hear songs like PI on Joanne, I can't help but think that she's still desperately holding onto a pop sound a little bit in order to maintain her current fanbase and keep in line with trends so she stands a chance of at least one hit. And hopes that liking the hit will encourage people to buy her album where they'll hear a more diverse sound and become hooked from there.

But at the same time, making a musical hybrid is what Gaga does. Why should she change what makes her unique? The only reason for her to change would be to please critics, who still insist on hopelessly outdated notions of cohesive albums instead of treating every good song as a gift, consistent or not. For supposed lovers of music, they sure like to be ridiculously strict with their rules of artistic freedom. Why should Gaga sacrifice her artistic vision to appease that bunch of snobs? At least if she's being underrated, she can get remembered as a misunderstood darling who never changed herself to please others instead of an overrated suck up who just followed what the experts told her to do.
