How can a man who chose MIKE PENCE as his VP be the most pro-gay President ever? Pence is among the most anti-gay politicians there are in this country. Also almost everything out of Trump's mouth is a lie so him saying he "supports gays" I believe about as much as I believe him when he says he has a very smart brain, i.e., not even a little.

Plus his support of the First Amendment Defense Act voids any supposed pro-gay stance when it effectively legalizes discrimination against LGBTQ people. 

If he was ACTUALLY pro-gay he would prove it with actions and by putting people in his administration who support and advocate for gay rights. Not with words used solely for the basis of PR and a publicity stunt. 

 

If you want to know a President who ACTUALLY IS a supporter of gay rights then look at President Obama. Though he didn't openly support marriage equality until 2012 (likely due to politics, as I can guarantee he always supported it when not publicly), President Obama has been speaking out for gay rights since the beginning before he was even elected President. 

 

This doesn't even mention everything he's done for the LGBTQ community while in office, which has been far-reaching and extensive. Trump won't do even a quarter of what Obama has done for LGBT people. 

The LGBT community has much to be thankful for as we have prospered and benefitted under Obama with his unwavering support of them.

Words and PR stunts from Trump don't outweigh policies and actions from the Obama administration.

 

Stop your illogical nonsense and delusions about Trump being so pro-gay when the facts prove otherwise in comparison to real politicians and a real president who have actually done things to benefit the gay community.

I honestly believe it was a combination of his presidency and progressive policies that created an environment for Lady Gaga's career, tbh... Do people honestly believe that "Born This Way" would have even seen the light of day under a republican president?  If it weren't for his presidency and constant support for the LGBT community, Gaga, and "Born This Way", I'm not sure I would have ever felt comfortable enough to come out of the closet and I'm sure there are many others in similar situations. We owe him a LOT.

I'm gonna guess that a lot of people posting here are too young to remember what life was like under the Bush presidency...

I'm not so certain that it would not have happened or that Gaga would have stopped because of who was President but I do agree that the cultural environment would not have been as conducive for such a campaign as BTW and it most definitely would not have allowed for such huge steps and success as has happened under Obama. 

We certainly do owe him and his administration a lot. I can't really speak to how it was under Bush I was very young and only just coming to terms with my sexuality then and was not aware, informed or involved how I am now.

 

But Obama and his dream and vision definitely helped me to come more to terms with myself what with seeing our President speak out in such support, and Gaga was the one who ultimately helped me accept myself and who I am.

Obama was the most pro gay president of all time. He paved the way for the current atmosphere and environment that we have in America where support for LGBT people has massively increased in this last decade. Being the most pro gay has nothing to do with "when" you were for gay marriage (as if thats even CLOSE to the most pressing issue LGBT people face in this damn country  ) or whether or not you were for something or against it when it was cool, but if we wanna play that card. Words mean nothing here without actions.  Obama is without a doubt the most importantly and overall "pro" gay president of all time. In fact, Hillary probably would not have been as "pro" gay as Obama was, and maybe even Bernie would not have been.

Technically the FADA doesn't specifically target LGBT people, only same-sex marriage and sex outside of marriage.

Honestly, I'd still disagree. Forgive me for being obsessed with technicalities and matters of nuance  

Superficial stances are just that; superficial. I can claim to be for a cause publicly but then take steps to work against that cause or more likely in this case be inactive in preventing harming that cause and it does disqualify me from being objectively "pro" said cause  That was a confusing sentence, but I think it made sense  

If we get really specific, the most we can say is this:

Trump is the first president to be elected who, at the time of his election, was not personally, actively against gay marriage or trans bathroom laws (There are a slew of other LGBT rights issues that he has made clear that he supports or opposes or is indifferent to that are not so mainstream; e.g FADA) It's much less of an accomplishment than you are making it seem basically.

I say "not against" because saying something is "fine" is not the same as enthusiastic, committed support, which is the goal. It's indifference. And indifference does not change social and political climates.

And I totally get it actually. Obama himself had to take a nuanced approach to coming out and saying "I support gay marriage" because optics and appealing to bases, personal growth, etc. It's totally possible Trump thinks that its great that gay people can get married and that he fully and truly respects them as humans deserving all the rights of other people.

(I do think its unlikely though, considering that he has continually made several quite homophobic statements (from decades ago up to 2016) that say that on a personal level, hes still quite ignorant on what it means to be an ally.)

Even when Obama was saying "I think marriage is between a man and a woman", he was more pro-gay in a sense than Trump is even today. He wasn't taking steps or allowing his party and supporters to espouse homophobia, try to roll back LGBT rights etc. etc. He wasn't decrying states for legalizing gay marriage and even his middle ground stance "I think that marriage..." was political and nuanced. He was never "I'm opposed to gay marriage. I think its a sin and I'm a traditionalist" or whatever.

I'm arguing that being "pro" gay or gay friendly as you put it is about more than appearances and not necessarily about when they public supported an issue or not. In hindsight, I actually think they would have both been as gay friendly as Obama is, but i'm not sure if they would have been able to match his impact culturally. (It's possible, just can't be sure  )

Being LGBT+ is becoming more and more socially acceptable in America, as are issues like gay marriage (though I'm always annoyed at how this issue takes the forefront of the debate tbh  )

The extent and speed of that change has been noted by researchers being unusually fast compared to usual trends on approval for controversial topics. I think its quite fair to say that the Obama administration was important in this. When baby steps were all people at the time could hope for, we've made it up an entire flight of stairs how I see it

But I dont think Trump is racist or homophobic. I think he just is careless with his words. 

 

I was just making a point that we are even about to have a republican Christian president who thinks that this law is stupid, so how could NC be so hardcore about protecting such a dumb law.....especially considering NC went for Trump but is perhaps the closest thing to a "blue southern state".
