It's a refreshing change of pace from DB, DBZ, and DBGT. You need to at least watch the Namek and Frieza sagas The movie coming in December is supposedly about Frieza's relationship with the Saiyans and there's probably a lot of lore you'll be missing out on if you miss Frieza's introduction, Goku's transformation, Vegeta's backstory, etc. GT isn't really related to the main story at all since Toriyama didn't make it himself (though he provided some designs and approved of SSJ4) but it's still highkey my favorite series. It is more comedic than action. My favourite arcs for DBZ of course Vegeta saga, Cell saga, and Majin Buu saga. Frieza is good and all, but somehow I never really warm up to him as a character and villain that much. But this saga is important for me because that is when I truly find a character to root for; Vegeta.
