MonsterofFame 1,785
I think Million Reasons might be about Gaga contemplating suicide in the past. She has been very open about her depression, PTSD, and other struggles in life. I entered the video expecting it to be a lot of references to a couple and relationship that is failing, but none of that is shown. Instead, it focuses on Gaga visibly upset, alone, and getting support from friends and family through a rough time. After seeing the rosary beads that were from her sister, I was confused because her sister didn't have much to do with the meaning of the song. And that's where this theory clicked. Re-watch the video with the idea of suicide in mind and a lot of it starts to make sense. Gaga laying alone on a field, abandoned, not wanting to get up. Friends and family running and pulling her up. Gaga still not wanting to get up but finally doing so because of the support. Now think about the lyrics: "I just need a good one to STAY" and then the parallel with the line from the song Joanne: "Take my hand, STAY Joanne". STAY in this case meaning: don't leave everyone who loves you. That one good reason to stay may have been her sister, as symbolized by the rosary beads Gaga receives from her. She didn't want her sister to suffer the same pain that her father suffered when his sister Joanne passed away at a young age. What do you all think? Altair 2,000
I think you have a point! Gaga has always been someone to have a meta message with her work.

Bling 31,356
So I've watched it 4 times. And the last time was the only one I watched PI first. I was kinda let down at first but now I get it. The MR video, as well as the "Joanne" music videos, are not the extravagant performance art that Gaga has been putting out before. These videos are her AS her. Living this life. It's so much more real and raw. I often wonder, even though she denies it, if the PI video really was about Taylor. She's so upset and heartbroken and is raging in the desert. In the MR video her friends/family come to find her and pull her back up. I think it's about moving on and having the strength to keep going after something traumatic (like a breakup). "Just need one good one to stay" could mean stay in the industry, stay in this life.... Just my thoughts.
Bling 31,356
My theory could be shot to **** if the third music video is all crazy Gaga again haha.
Letmelivemylife 8,715
Ive always secretly thought that "million reasons" was a sort of "I wanna be with you 2.0". She had a million reasons to let go ( mostly the people who just see her as a cash cow) but her true monsters (not the whiny critics) gave her a million reasons to stay. She was looking over that metaphorical dark cliff wanting to jump because she felt like she didn't have anything left to live for but she realized that by jumping, she would leave behind the family, friends, and monsters she loves so much. If someone can look at her and say her love for her monsters is artifical, they need to get their eyes examined. She was always there for us no questions asked and now it's our turn to be there for her. Remember this is still the same woman who said "what you and I have little monsters has no end. It's eternal. No matter what I'll always be there to catch you when you fall. I'll tell you one thing. There will never be another pop singer who loves you more than I do". I love you monsters. I'd be unfixably broken without you

MJR 296
After watching the video again I completely agree with this theory. We have three stages of the music video: There is the colored "real life" story of her driving off into the desert and going through the realization it wasn't love in perfect illusion. After dropping to the ground we see three cars driving fast to see it Gaga is alright. Throughout the MR video we see parts of her friends trying to console her in the desert. And the sad look she has on the ride back would make sense. The next part is the black and white still "real life" story. Every part of this stage Gaga seems troubled and "off". It isn't until she receives the gift from her sister (probably after hearing what happened in the PI MV) of a rosary. She does ask the lord to show her the way in MR so I get it. The last part is the act she puts on when the cameras are rolling. This is first illustrated when she turns around now in color looking at the camera. Then we get another shot with the white background but there is a camera between us and Gaga. She is now putting on an act. She is smiling the whole time but we repeatedly are shown the other two battles Gaga was really facing. She is fighting through this pain but in reality (the two other stages) she was fighting a battle with herself. I will not lie I was disappointed by the video at first but if this is true it makes the first two music videos storyline amazing!
MonsterPaws 2,726
I always think about my own suicidal thoughts when I listen to Million Reasons. And I'm 99% sure Gaga wrote the song about suicide while using love as a metaphor for life.

Exactly. I know what it's like to be in a place so dark you can't see the light and you wanna give up. I myself was in that black hole 8 years ago. They say that God works in mysterious ways and I definitely believe that. After all of the bad things I'd done in my life, I didn't deserve to be saved and yet Gaga came and pulled me out of that deep black hole. I clung to her for dear life because I was terrified of slipping back into that dark hole. Suicide was actually my first thought when I saw the video. I'm so glad that she saw the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak and decided that she had so much to live for (her family friends and her monsters). Thank god because I would break without her. I remember how dark life was before gaga and I don't ever wanna go back to that place. People say that she's "just" a popstar but she's so much more than that. I love you monsters. I'd be unfixably broken without you

After the first viewing I was a bit underwhelmed, but in classic Gaga style the depth of it made it worth viewing many times again once I took a closer look. I'll have to watch it with your whole post in mind with the colored scenes and their meanings.
