DRAMAtical Murder

Thought it'd be nice to take everyone's mind off of things with one of the best Boys' Love visual novels ever.

TVTropes teaser:

Spoiler

Some time ago, Midorijima, an island southwest of Japan, was purchased by the highly influential Toue Company. Their plan was to build a high-tech luxury amusement facility called Platinum Jail, for the exclusive perusal for all those rich enough around the world to afford it. Of course, the original inhabitants of the island got screwed in the process. What coexistence there once was between Midorijima's people and the lush natural environment prevalent throughout was abruptly cut off. All those who didn't leave the island at Toue Company's suggestion were eventually forced to move to a corner of the island called the Old Resident District. All those who have stayed cannot leave, unless they receive Toue's permission. The Toue Company won't give that permission anytime soon, as punishment from the head of the company who was highly annoyed at the more stubborn locals. Soon after development on Platinum Jail completed, Toue abandoned the former residents of the island outright.

Twenty years in the future, in Midorijima, an island southwest of Japan, a guy named Aoba lives with his tough-as-nails doctor granny, Tae, and his dog-type All-matenote , Ren. Aoba's always found it odd how dropping his voice to a certain inflection could drive people to call up Heibon, the shop he's working at, to hear it again and again, buying Heibon's mechanical goods every time. But hey, it does its job, so why not make use of it? Sadly, said power can't really help him with that trio of rambunctious children that always show up at the store just to make a mess. He also has to contend with his unusual friends that are involved in gang activity that he's long since left behind. His life is an amicable one, although as with all who've been left to carry their lives out in the Old Resident District in the years of Toue's acquisition of Midorijima, it is by no means prosperous. In those ensuing years, a game called "Ribsteez" (also known as "Rib") rose in popularity, in which gangs of young men would go out of their way to engage in turf wars against one another. More recently, another competitor have been taking over people's interests; a game called "Rhyme," whose participants and their watchers scatter throughout the city to engage in fights that unfold on a virtual reality but are seen right before their eyes. Anyone can play "Rhyme" if they have an All-mate and the fights are mediated and started by Usui, a judge with a female appearance and a male voice who randomly appears to signal the start of a match. Recently, a trend of "drive-by" matches have started, where people can force others into a "Rhyme" match with no mediation by Usui and most dangerously, any injuries taken during the game can impact the player's health in real life.

Aoba just wants to keep the peaceful life he shares with Tae and Ren, but the accidental download of a mysterious 8-bit game called "Silent Oath" and getting caught in a drive-by "Rhyme" game leads to any real chance of normalcy in his life going out the window...

Despite being rather well known for a few things besides the sex scenes, DMMD is actually a rather well driven story based around its characters, and has an active plot that changes with the bachelor you've picked. You find something different all your choices.

Koujaku: Aoba's childhood friend. Leader of the "Rib" gang Benishigure, which are often associated with more traditional Japanese stylings due to taking after their leader's style and attitude. Koujaku is also an accomplished hair dresser (despite the fact he runs a pop-up shop version of a barber's shop, just doing business when he pleases), and his touch is reported to "take you to heaven".

Noiz: A heavily pierced rhyme player who is obsessed with fighting Aoba in Rhyme. It's hinted he may know of Aoba's past, and forces him into a drive-by Rhyme, though Aoba cannot identify him at the time. He also has skills in hacking computers.

Clear: An eccentric who fell from the sky one day calling Aoba master. He constantly wears a mask and has all sorts of strange unexplainable, alien behavior.

Mink: An ex-convict who leads a Rib gang of felons in the Northern district of Midorijima.  Has an obsession for taking down Toue, for unknown reasons.

There's a secret route and technically three more bachelors, but I'm not telling who.

In the PSVita remake, Mizuki was added as another option, and is considered the third canon option due to the fact his route covers plotholes not addressed in the main visual novel or supplementary material. But there is no fantranslation due to Vita's harder to hack and emulate status.

I love the entirety of DRAMAtical Murder. The characters, the music, the plot, the smut, the music, the art, the music...

Have I mentioned the music?

Check out that sh!t.

Play the visual novel. It's really amazing. The story is one of the best I've read.

Sorry for the bump.

I saw the anime labeled as yaoi and went to check it and it had 0% yaoi :emma:  So I was deeply disappointed. Is the VN more yaoi-heavy?

The VN is totally more yaoi heavy. It is actually labeled an eroge (erotic game) however it has more plot than p0rn.

The thing is with anime of VN, is that the anime usually not only water down the erotica or feelings or portrayl of the feelings, but also go out of their way to make-up a new storyline or try and find a new canon.

The only thing anyone liked about the anime was how it had an ending where everyone was okay. Everyone had a happy ending. We kind of don't get full closure for anyone in the VN, except in the secret route.

The anime of Togainu No Chi (one of Nitro+Chiral's other BL VNs) was also prettied watered down.

Just a little info:

If it's based on a visual novel, it's best to play the visual novel. The anime will never do it justice. Never.

I watched all of Gakuen Heaven.

For one kiss.

One.

One.

ONE.

Another reason to never watch anime of visual novels is because you're not going to get the full story as adaptations play the cutting of branches game. Usually they either adapt the true ending or what is considered the canon ending, or make up their own, like the anime of DMMd did.

Like I said, anything based on a VN is bound to be watered down.

The original VN has sex scenes. I need to download it.

There are versions of it that have a lot of extra stuff, but one of the coolio extra versions has absolutely no voice acting and it makes me sad. And it's like one of the few super available versions of Gakuen Heaven that''s actually been fantranslated.
