Because black people are a sizable chunk of this country and Republicans are afraid of them holding political power in this country  He's thankful that enough of them "stayed home" and didn't vote (Thanks voter suppression and disenfranchisement  ) because it helped him win the election. It's not an honest "thanks!" its more like a middle finger tbh.
