Gaga and Madonna are kindred spirits--always attempting to break boundaries, empowering marginalized groups by bringing important social issues to the forefront, bringing art and shock into music and entertainment, both have very powerful influence in the music industry. Yes, they had a spat back then. Madonna was mean. But let's not act like Gaga also never took "jabs" long after the issue has died down. They partied together on more than one occasion. Madonna has praised Gaga long after the "reductive" comment. Gaga has praised Madonna, and even as recent as last week, she included a Madonna song in her spread kindness campaign. They both supported Hillary. Why, WHY, W H Y would monsters rather look at the difference instead of their similarities? Madonna is a legend, one of the few living ones we have. She influenced Gaga and paved the way for all your other faves you put so high in a pedestal. Madonna deserves some respect. I'm not telling you to like her or her music. What I am trying to say is to at least give credit to where it is due. She is definitely blunt and abrasive at times, but she would not have survived in the industry, she would not have been able to shape the pop music culture as it is now--the very same pop culture you enjoy with its stan wars, vicarious living with your "queens", she would have failed in furthering LGBTQ rights for this generation. How many times have we heard Gaga fans say *insert name here* copied Gaga? You really do believe pop culture began in 2008, don't you? This is called inspiration. Plus Gaga is influenced by many other artists too.

Rugbyguy 144
I've never waded into the 'Gaga copied Madonna' debate but I was really dissapointed when Laurieanne Gibson admitted that she and Gaga deliberately ripped off Madonna. I mean you can't get any better confirmation than that. I don't believe she's copied Madonna per say but she's been incredibly inspired by her in many ways. To be fair most pop girls have been. That's what drew me and a lot of people to Gaga in the first place. Madonna was away for three years making a film and here was this Italian American girl making pop music, bringing art back into pop culture and wearing avant-garde fashion. We were reminded so much of Madonna, it was a great feeling and when Gaga initially was flattered by the comparisons and was very complimentary towards Madonna, I was like 'hey, this is a chick I could really enjoy' and I adored her. I even loved Born This Way because once again it reminded me of Madonna and I liked that. When she got up and thanked Whitney Houston at the Grammys as a way of deflecting the controversy that's when I took a step back. I still played the BTW album every day and the same with ARTPOP but I'm forever a tad suspicious of her. She's still my number 2 female artist but i felt betrayed by what happened because I really believed in her.

She made me respect her even more today. Hear what she says about AIDS please It's sad to say it, but only dead, she'll finally be widely recognized as one of the most impactful women in human kind. I hate her music and personality but I 100% respect the impact she caused and her smartness. Altough I must say i disagree with her on the "they dont play me on the radio because of my age" idea, even if it is a factor most fans agree that her recent work is just not on par with her golden years, and because the queen of reinvention seems to be stuck in the past. But other than that, loved her speech

People on here are insinuating that she has no business mentioning herself in the same context as Bowie, MJ, Prince, Whitney. She mentions them because give or take a few years they are all from the same era and she is the only one left. There are no mega stars of that time still alive, relevant and thriving today. That is her point. I mentioned sales because millenials and Gaga fans refuse to acknowledge her accomplishments and then snicker when she or others mention her in the same sentence as these other legends. Trust me, if Gaga is still relevant in 20 years time and you remain a fan, you too will defend her when some smart assed teenager try's to deny her achievements. Bowie and Madonna are not from the same era... And I said it is cringe worthy to put her name next to the likes of bowie and prince because of something else that has nothing to do with success or being alive whatsoever. Her comparation was tasteless, and that's all. Fear, she's the mother of violence

androiduser 7,438
if someone is the biggest star of their generation and their society, then they are also the product of that very society and all its negative aspects... Madonna's fame is a product of ageism - she didn't become a huge star when she was 50, but when she was 24-25 and she replaced some stars who were too old. Now she's complaining because she can no longer benefit from the negativity of the very society that helped her build her career. The same goes for Gaga and everyone who made it big. Not to to mentioned how many times Madonna backed out and tamed her image after big controversies or went back to commercial pop hits wearing leotards after supposedly political albums flopped. She - and every other major star - is a product of this society's positive and negative aspects, and none of them have any right to complain. This evil world has made you who you are, so shut up.
