Ohio bans abortion after 1 month and a half

Ohio legislators passed a “heartbeat bill” Wednesday that bans abortion after a fetus’s heartbeat can be heard — on average around six weeks into a pregnancy. The bill has no exception for cases of rape or incest.

The bill was tacked on at the last minute to another bill addressing child abuse. It was approved in the Republican-dominated state House and Senate, and will now move on to Republican and anti-abortion Gov. John Kasich’s desk. He will sign or veto it within the next 10 days.

“A hallmark of lame duck” — a term used to describe sessions of lawmakers that sit between when elections are over and the new lawmakers take office — “is a flood of bills, including bills inside of bills, and we will closely examine everything we receive,” said Kasich’s press secretary, Emmalee Kalmbach.

The American Civil Liberties Union told BuzzFeed News that they are preparing to fight back against ban, should it become law. “if Governor Kasich signs that bill, we will absolutely challenge that in federal court,” Mike Brickner, senior policy director of ACLU Ohio, said. “We believe that it is unconstitutional.”

Pardon my French but men need to ****ing stay out of women's health issues. They don't have female reproductive organs so why are they qualified to make discussions regarding those reproductive organs? I was raped at 14 and I got pregnant. To anyone who thinks that it was just a "hmmm I think I'll have an abortion" thought, **** you. I ****ing agonized over that decision. I laid awake countless nights thinking "is there any other way?". I loved that baby. That was my baby. It felt like someone had ripped my heart out afterwards. I laid in bed for days unable to move, to shower, to do anything because the guilt was so strong. My grandma finally caught on and I'll never ever forget the look of pure disappointment on her face.

I love you monsters. I'd be unfixably broken without you

EDIT: Please read what's in bold. Just because you're right (or believe so) doesn't give you a pass to be a complete a**hole. I want a clear, logical, and last but not least kind response that can enlighten me. And thank you.

This.

But at the same time I honestly do believe at a certain point abortion shouldn't be legal. What's the difference between killing a baby inside the womb when it's already almost fully developed and killing a baby after birth? Would killing it after birth be allowed as well (not after weeks or months but days or hours) if the mother thinks she wouldn't be able to support the child?

For the cases of rape or incest, we should encourage women to come forward if they're pregnant and support them as much as possible till they are able to have an abortion, or have an extension to the ruling.

I just genuinely find this ban reasonable. If anyone disagrees please tell me why. I need another strong perspective on this besides "their baby their choice" as that doesn't seem like a valid argument to me.

Your personal belief is yours, but should not infringe on other women's rights and what they feel is right for themselves and their body.  Abortion does have a cut off time period.  The opposition has wrongly described abortions as being all the up to almost term and given a false idea on the average abortion, scare tactics.

People need to focus on helping all the foster children being pushed around from foster home to foster home and at 18 pushed out into the world with no home.  Start focusing on all the unwanted children already here on this earth out there in the United States.  Oh, wait, the Republicans are against more services that are government funded and help all the unwanted children.

Focus on more accessible birth control.

Lol. Do these people have any idea how pregnancy works? Many people often don't find out they are pregnant until they are 7 weeks - there is not enough to allow a woman to consider and potentially undergo an abortion with this limit. This is just another example of how laws like these have nothing to do with the welfare of the child, but rather policing the decisions made by women regarding their bodies.

I'm only okay with abortion when it is absolutely necessary, like when a woman is pregnant and doesn't want to be anymore.

I have already been told this but thank you for your kind response as well, and opening up my perspective even further.

I also don't quite understand how my opinion infringes on women's rights, especially when I'm trying to understand what's going in the first place. I agree with abortion. Because if I was one of the legislators even though my opinion is that abortion should have a limit, I would NEVER agree to pass this bill. But originally, my main problem with abortion is the life of the baby. I just can't wrap my head around the idea of killing a child if it's already developed (as others have already pointed out that's by the 24th week / the cut off period).

We fight for animal rights, suicide, etc but somehow it's okay to kill a baby? (Again, if it's after the cut off period), as some rude user said that being against one type of abortion means against all types of abortions which I strongly disagree with because clearly there's a cutoff period as you and others have mentioned.

Also, my only problem with the idea of the rights of a person over their body is that it can be dangerous to describe it so generally, as there is the debate of the right to commit suicide. But that's completely irrelevant to the main topic so you can ignore that point.

Once again thank you for the keen insight

Should be up to the mother look at abortion pamphlets, not some old men behind a few mahogany desks.

What about their body, their choice?

Why should anyone have the right to tell a women that she has to incubate a child that she doesn't want/didn't ask for? We live in a society where we have to have a corpse's permission to use their organs and save someone's life but we'll force a woman to carry a pregnancy to term just because?

And it's never a sense of morality with these people either. Like a thread said earlier today, they're not "pro-life", they're "pro-birth". After the kid's born, they could care less what happens to them. Starve 'em, throw their mother/parents into debt with the medical bill, give them a piss poor education, make it harder for them to seek higher education if they finish high school, and ensure that they'll work a dead end job before you take away their retirement benefits, medicaid, social security, etc.

It's such a sh*t system.

Basically, no one has a right to tell a woman what she can and can't do with her body. When they find a way to magically teleport a fetus out of a woman's womb and into another's womb, then color me anti-abortion. Until then, pro-choice is the only way to go.

Pretty against abortion unless it's rape, incest, or some dangerous situation for the baby or mother. I mean I'm pro-choice though because I can't imagine getting pregnant and being forced to have a kid, but also you should make the choice to practice safe sex, not to end a life.

There's no such thing as "safe sex". Sex is never safe. Preservatives make it less risky but there's still a chance to get pregnant even if you use a condom or contraception pills.

Wow. I didn't even know I was even pregnant till like 10 weeks. Most women don't even know they're pregnant till after their second missed period. Pretty much a slap in the face for victims of rape/incest.

Quoting you but my question is in general. How can one be a victim of incest? If a woman's blood relative rapes her that is still rape, right?

Well then you should accept the risk  I mean it's not just your own life that it will effect by having an abortion. Whether or not anyone is willing to admit it's murder which truly is debatable, the fetus still will become a life and if you brought it into being you should take responsibility for it.

Please reread the underlined and bolded lines in my post. People have already enlightened me on the subject so any further replies are simply redundant.

But to touch on the argument of "their body their choice", my only issue is this opens up the prospect of the right to suicide.

Again people, I AGREE with abortion. NOT against it, and will 100% defend women's rights. My only issue is ending a life (that is after the 24th week as users have already mentioned). I don't see how people promote animal rights, human rights (sans babies), yet somehow abortion (after the 24th week) is justified, as once again for the millionth time, someone had told me that being against one kind of abortion means being anti-abortion completely, which is clearly wrong.

Doctors are required to save the mother's life over the child's because the mother is the OBGYN's patient  this is actually controversial in the states that want to prioritize the child, because the mother should always be the focus (in modern medical ethics).

I find this so stupid. Like, if the mother dies the child will also die. You basically save one life and lose one or lose both, there is no other option in those awful situations :smh:

That's what's ironic about this though. These same people that are so against abortion are also against the very things that saw abortion rates fall drastically in the last few decades. Contraception, sex education, as well as Planned Parenthood that offers both of those services and more.

It's ludicrous. They raised their kids to be tight lipped about sex and told them the only way is to wait until you're married. That's exactly why their teenage pregnancy, STD, and abortion rates were so much higher than our generation's :smh:

And one more thing, someone tell them that outlawing abortion doesn't stop abortions from happening. It just stops safe abortions.

Honestly, I just loathe how it's basically men deciding whether to ban abortion or not. Most women cannot even conceive the fact of performing an abortion; it truly is one of the most difficult decisions a woman or a couple have to make. Abortion is the last thing a woman would want to do in the case of her prospective child, yet that doesn't mean the option should not be there in those instances where such a choice must be given consideration. Overall, it comes down to the woman's decision, as difficult as it may be, and for a male dominated congress to tell a woman what to do with her body is absolutely ridiculous

I do think it's wrong that men make these laws, but I don't think it's just the woman's decision to decide if she wants to keep the child or not. Many many years ago, my boyfriend and his then girlfriend lost their son that they were expecting. And when ever he talks about that time in his life I know he feels empty like a part of him was lost. I know miscarrying isn't the topic of discussion, but I know he'd still feel the same if she got an abortion.

I personally believe it should be a decision between the mother AND father. If the mother does not want to keep the child and the father does, give the child to the father. If both do not want the child, then let them do what they feel is right.

Pregnancy from rape is possible, so it wouldn't be the woman's choice.
