Lion Heart 15,041
Ohio legislators passed a “heartbeat bill” Wednesday that bans abortion after a fetus’s heartbeat can be heard — on average around six weeks into a pregnancy. The bill has no exception for cases of rape or incest. The bill was tacked on at the last minute to another bill addressing child abuse. It was approved in the Republican-dominated state House and Senate, and will now move on to Republican and anti-abortion Gov. John Kasich’s desk. He will sign or veto it within the next 10 days. “A hallmark of lame duck” — a term used to describe sessions of lawmakers that sit between when elections are over and the new lawmakers take office — “is a flood of bills, including bills inside of bills, and we will closely examine everything we receive,” said Kasich’s press secretary, Emmalee Kalmbach. The American Civil Liberties Union told BuzzFeed News that they are preparing to fight back against ban, should it become law. “if Governor Kasich signs that bill, we will absolutely challenge that in federal court,” Mike Brickner, senior policy director of ACLU Ohio, said. “We believe that it is unconstitutional.” https://www.buzzfeed.com/emaoconnor/ohio-passes-law-that-bans-abortion-after-a-month-and-a-half?utm_term=.wkDNEK8rQ&bffbvid#.ew1YExOwz ▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀

LeoElectric 191
what if it comes down to the mothers life being in jeopardy while giving birth, and in order for the mother to live it required an abortion? Would that be considered?

Would that be considered? EDIT 2: You can stop quoting me as many kind users have informed me that there actually is a cut-off period for abortion. But this Ohio bill seems to want to replace that period with 6 weeks which many users have said is unreasonable. Thank you to all who understand the concept of human decency and the importance of responding in a level-headed manner. Much love. EDIT: Please read what's in bold. Just because you're right (or believe so) doesn't give you a pass to be a complete a**hole. I want a clear, logical, and last but not least kind response that can enlighten me. And thank you. This. But at the same time I honestly do believe at a certain point abortion shouldn't be legal. What's the difference between killing a baby inside the womb when it's already almost fully developed and killing a baby after birth? Would killing it after birth be allowed as well (not after weeks or months but days or hours) if the mother thinks she wouldn't be able to support the child? For the cases of rape or incest, we should encourage women to come forward if they're pregnant and support them as much as possible till they are able to have an abortion, or have an extension to the ruling. I just genuinely find this ban reasonable. If anyone disagrees please tell me why. I need another strong perspective on this besides "their baby their choice" as that doesn't seem like a valid argument to me.
LePetitGAGABLover 21,234
I think both sides of wrong. Liberals focus on abortion while conservatives focus on anti-abortion. I mean, shouldn't we be focusing on free birth control so women don't need to resort to an abortion? Oh wait, conservatives hate that too.

I'm sorry but if you genuinely find a 6 week ban reasonable then you need to go read about fetus development and pregnancy. Having an uneducated opinion is worse than having no opinion. hausofkc 2,530
Wow. I didn't even know I was even pregnant till like 10 weeks. Most women don't even know they're pregnant till after their second missed period. Pretty much a slap in the face for victims of rape/incest.

Could you at least bother to read my post beyond the first two lines? I literally asked for another opinion because I know mine isn't enough. Please don't quote me/reply to me again, especially when you're not even putting the effort of reading my replies in the first place.

He didnt say anything that was cringeworthy to me U simply dont agree with him and at what development is reasonable I also agree with his point. Whats the difference if its inside the womb or already out? Does the value of the babys life change that much?
xoxo cupcakke 4,781
Honestly, I just loathe how it's basically men deciding whether to ban abortion or not. Most women cannot even conceive the fact of performing an abortion; it truly is one of the most difficult decisions a woman or a couple have to make. Abortion is the last thing a woman would want to do in the case of her prospective child, yet that doesn't mean the option should not be there in those instances where such a choice must be given consideration. Overall, it comes down to the woman's decision, as difficult as it may be, and for a male dominated congress to tell a woman what to do with her body is absolutely ridiculous

I am pro-choice, but only up to a certain point. If a baby has developed enough to sustain life outside of the womb or feel pain, then it seems really wrong Before that period, I don't see the issue. I think there should obviously be exceptions, especially with rape, incest, or if the pregnancy jeopardizes the mother's life. It's not a black or white issue in my mind. Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet.

Oh wait, conservatives hate that too. I mean, yes, but then we'd have to talk about how to access that birth control, who's gonna pay for that birth control, what if the birth control fails for some reason, etc. Abortion should still be a legal option in cases where birth control fails and the child poses a threat to the mother, or in cases where the offspring is the result of a rape. Again, it is the last option many women will choose if all else fails, but if the option is not there, the women are pretty much screwed. If you're poor and are dealing with an unwanted pregnancy or a potentially dangerous pregnancy, you're pretty much screwed because you don't the resources to support the child, which would, in effect, create an endless cycle of poverty and missed opportunities
