Delulu Rogers 7,234
people hated the era more than the actual album itself. Having said that it was a huge downgrade from btw to ARTPOP in terms of commercial performance and the actual music itself. Many songs sounded like fillers and the album seemed like a collection of random music without a cohesive idea. Plus she hyped it up too much and made a bunch of empty promises that led to the media and fans turing their backs to her. Then there was the DWUW mess and a blackout period and everything just went down the drain very fast. Also, she realized too late in the year and was overshadowed by twerking miley and a bunch of other stars. The whole era experience lead to people hating the album itself when in reality, it was one of the best albums of the year.

ToxicHot 6,444
I wonder what we would've seen if Venus was never changed as a single. Just imagine, all the promo DWUW had... but for VENUS She hyped us about the Venus music video, when we didn't even get proper video treatment for DWUW. It was filmed but never released due to controversy with Terry Richardson. She may as well just have done whatever the hell song she wanted for a video at that point, or have just re-shot the damn thing. I liked the scene with the newspaper dress, but the whole lobster scene in the hospital bed? Really? She's basically being sexually harassed while she sleeps--of course it's going to cause controversy, it's GAGA. The song is sexy and all ("do what u want, with my bodddaayyyy") but it's really supposed to be about the haters. ....... ugh idk. DWUW should have gone at least top 5, and it should have been her biggest single since Poker Face. But at least we got some cool performances, a wide variety of them actually. Also, I really like R. Kelly's contribution to the song but imagine if it was someone bigger. Like Drake or The Weeknd. That song would have DEFINITELY smashed. /rant dOnT sAd ReAcT mE 2 bE sHaDy i WiLL RePoRt U!!1! RochestrMonstr 3,181
The Born this Way era was really where the damage began as far as the GP being "over her". There was no way to make everyone happy with ARTPOP. People said she went too far with BTW, and it seemed like she tried to go back a step as far as seriousness/darkness with ARTPOP, and it blew up in her face. ARTPOP was doomed before it ever even came out. By the second half of 2011, she was so overexposed. I don't think it mattered what she did next. It didn't stand a chance, people were going to tear it apart. I feel the overexposure damage caused during the Born This Way era often gets overlooked because of the sales/multiple hits. But it was all very front loaded, before the overexposure became too much. I actually find ARTPOP to be her second best album, after Joanne. It had been a while but I couldn't help but feel this had got an unfair rep. Other than Jewels N' Drugs, most of the tracks are top notch. Great hooks, funky production and several potential singles. Why Gypsy was not a single I will never know. I wasn't around the forums here at that time, but what was the feeling? I think it's stood the test of time very well. ARTPOP is my 2nd favorite Gaga album

Kelly’s Alleged Sex Crimes Are Still Horrific 13 Years Later The NYT editorial says it all. "Imagine that you are a pop star who wrote a song called “Do What U Want” that prominently features the line “do what you want with my body.” Now imagine that you invite a singer who has been the subject of several lawsuits alleging sexual assaults on minors to be the featured artist on the song. Then imagine the song’s music video is directed by a photographer who has been accused of exploiting models and coercing them into sexual activity. Then imagine that the concept of the video involves said featured artist playing the role of a doctor who does whatever he wants with your body while you are out cold on the operating table." http://time.com/2901179/lady-gaga-r-kelly-music-video/ It was a mess through and through. shmal96 2,928
Like others have said, try to separate the ARTPOP album and the ARTPOP era.. While most can agree that the era was pretty disjointed, messy and letdown, the album itself has some really amazing songs, hooks, production value. Personally it's my favorite album as a love almost every song there.

ChvVolk 2,296
I personally was underwhelmed. I remember she would post videos, for example when she pierced her septum and they would play real house music production in the background and her description of the tracks, so I thought she was really gonna go all out and do filthy house productions and trance tracks, I thought her lyrics were gonna be serious and fuse art and pop, like how Bloody Mary talks about Micheal Angelo, when "Applause" cane out it was too bubblegum for me. When she teased Sexxx Dreams lyrics I was hyped again with the wording, swinefest hyped me up too, especially swine, when we got the album, I just felt like the satire didn't work anymore. The tracks were too pop for me, nothing complextro or techno, like she described. Just typical cookie cutter dance tracks so it was a let down. Bear 7,515
I didn't really like the album or the theme. To me everything sounded overproduced yet simultaneously like an unfinished demo . The album had very little cohesion and that made it sound like a compilation of tracks rather than a concept. The majority of the songs didn't match the intention of the album. The processed EDM sounds became old very fast. The lyrics were weak in places. I'm not trying to sound like a hater, but for my tastes it was definitely my least favourite album from Gaga.
