Metallica is a LEGENDARY band with incredible influence on rock and metal whose illustrious career has spanned many decades. It has a massive fan base and is in a league of its own. I hope Gaga has its level of exposure and influence when she's several decades into her career. A large proportion of Metallica fans are older people, so it's no surprise that it had outstanding physical sales despite an early online release. Also, it's a very good album.
