I know Cuban people who grew up in the school system who say he was portrayed as a savior..... meanwhile actual religions were opressed. 

 

 

 

It sounds very similar to Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Albania under Enver Hoxha etc. Kids were brainwashed in school to sing about and praise the president, religion was (almost) prohibited. You will find today older people who will praise those times as "more safe", but they'll overlook or deny the government crimes and oppression, because it didn't affect them.

That's what I was getting ready to say actually. By this logic, Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il should be just as revered as well as Rafael Trujillo and Hugo Chavez. Although out of all the ones listed, Chavez and Castro were probably the least terrible but that doesn't distance them from their multiple injustices to human rights and civility

Idk I have mixed feelings about Castro. I do feel like some people need to calm down with their attacking of those who are giving their thoughts though. He was a revolutionary turned authoritarian kleptocrat. Rest in peace to the revolutionary but rest in piss to the corrupt authoritarian.

I feel like this article does a good job at highlighting what good Castro did and the hypocrisy of some negative reactions

Well the Soviet Union did love Castro and Cuba was basically their proxy state during the Cold War.

Interesting fact: Castro is said to have survived 638 murder attempts by the CIA  

The one thing about Castro and his regime is that is is quite.... remarkable how they managed to push back against the US for so long and fought against Capitalism and Imperialism.

But at what cost? 

It seems like since USA-Cuba relations are evolving Capitalism will eventually come to Cuba and make a significant impact.

If I'm not wrong Cuba's government has 'loosened' many of their restrictions from the past.

Justin Trudeau seems afraid to bring up controversial issues. He never takes a direct stance anymore its always vague and wishy washy. He doesnt wanna upset anyone ever and his ratings is all her cares about

 

Haper would bring up unpopular things such as raising retirement age because of low birth rates and aging population and the extreme strain in the pension fund

 

Trudeau would never bring up stuff like that even if its for ppls own good. People often dont like distasteful medicine and wont elect anyone who suggests it
