You realize the "cancelled" thing is just a joke, right? So defensive lol. Still don't like Justin's statement on this "remarkable leader" I know plenty of Cubans living in the US and their lives were made so much harder by Castro's regime. Unclear what you mean by this, US economy has boomed since Trump was elected and our stock exchange has hit decade highs? Are you referring the Brexit? But yeah, these comments shocked and appalled me when I read them this morning. Even if he DID propose good reforms, are we really going to go to such lengths as impose a communist dictatorship that murdered thousands of innocent people, censor the Internet, and jail journalists to get to those reforms? lego 44,165 Posted November 28, 2016 Share Posted November 28, 2016 My Twitter feed was full of contradicting tweets about Castro, White Cubans, Black Cubans, people who visited or lived some time in Cuba, American Cubans, people who only know stories of Cubans in America etc. Everyone had something different to say and I don't know who to believe tbh. One of the good things he did tho, supporting Mandela and opposing Apartheid, you can't deny that http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/4400212 But just like with every communist (or inspired by communism) leader/dictator there are those who "enjoyed benefits" under his rule and those who opposed him and "disappeared". It happened with Tito, Stalin, Saddam, Gaddafi, Assad etc etc. You will still find people who praise them and people who curse them. It does seem like SOME hate Castro more because he was anti American; for example when King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia died, he was praised as a reformer by the Western leaders, just because SA is an ally. Same with other allies in the region. Their leaders are not called out on human rights violations, war crimes and torture. Because even the USA has torture camp in Cuba. If Netanyahu tomorrow dies, I am sure they will all shower him with praise. At the end of the day, Castro was still dictator. But all world leaders are always big hypocrites when it comes to these things. Sorry MP, just my two cents. I don't want to argue, just saying things as outsider. I saw some clip, I'm not really for celebration of anyone's death tbh, but I can understand if they feel happy or relieved that he died. 90 years old, it must've felt like he ruled forever. But then they say Cubans in Cuba were mourning. I can believe all the horror stories, because each of these dictators I mentioned tried to create propaganda of idyllic life of their people, some might be true, some exaggeration and foreign visitors got that impression too, so that is probably the reason people give contradicting statements. Well he did have supporters which is why the revolution happened. As for his opponents.... dead, exiled, fled, imprisoned. Like a lot of Communist education in school they are taught to love their leader. xoxo cupcakke 4,781 Posted November 28, 2016 Share Posted November 28, 2016 Kind of weirded out how Fidel is being touted as this revolutionary who, with his guerrilla tactics, took down American presence in Cuba and made it an independent state, which he did but he also had a lot of people murdered and made life so hard in Cuba that people had to leave the country and start life anew somewhere else.
