The environment, Trump, and The Paris Climate Deal

I wrote this in a Trump supporters thread but nobody responded, so I will copy and paste again:

To keep it serious, Trump supporters, what do you think about his stance on climate change (believing it is a hoax) and the environment? Are any of you environmentalists?

Being president covers all areas, but climate change is very serious and it bothers me that people who are older tend to ignore it because it's not something that will affect them in their lifetime, what do you guys think?

What do you think will happen with the Paris deal?

Whether you are a Trump supporter or not, I want to discuss this civilly and maturely, what stance do you think he will take regardless of what he has said in the past? And what are your predictions about the Paris Deal? I take any topic about the environment seriously, and I was wondering what others on this site including supporters think about how Trump seems to point towards ignoring environmental issues. How will this affect our future as the new generation?

I think I could actually deal with a Trump presidency if he fought against Climate change and believed in it.

If we regress in all of our social and civil movements, I don't care as long as we still have a world to live in. We could recover our progress.

Nothing we do matters if we live in an environment that can't sustain us.

This is quite similar to me, I am willing to give him a chance, but the facts so far regarding everything he has said about climate change is pretty damning and disappointing. Why would I support someone who is so much older than I and is ignoring a large part of world politics that could deeply affect my life?

I'm lowkey the same. Climate change is the one thing that I am mostly worried about mainly because it affects the world, not just the U.S.

However his stances on gender, race and religion are still disgusting. I'm perched for his announcement that he has been very left wing this whole time and was just pandering to the republican voters just to get in.

most people who this economically effects wont be able to see past the immediate economic consequences of entirely embracing sustainability. like when hillary clinton talked about killing coal industry, she got heavy backlash. the idea of reducing employment opportunities for workers will make people, who live in areas that have lots of factories to work in, comfort themselves with 2 beliefs, either its too far gone and climate change is inevitable and it is too late to stop  it with an economically harmful "environment saving" plan or the mistrust of science and the accusation that climate scientists are massively profiting from proselytizing  their fear mongering global warming theory that funds many of their scientific endeavors and gives their field of science more prominence.  the average joe will continue to not care about the issue. 

 

i think trump on the other hand will be prodded to stay the course obama set out on. maybe a few violations here or there.

The one positive I'm trying to take from this is that I hope this inspires people, from every nation, to actually get fired up about climate change. Climate change is real, it's happening and it's going to affect us and our children and our grandchildren.

At the Paris climate conference 195 countries agreed a legally binding deal to take action to keep global warming to below 2C, however experts have questioned whether that agreement even goes far enough to prevent long-term environmental damage.

I think everyone felt lethargic under Obama and other world leaders. There was a feeling of "Why bother protesting? World leaders have to compromise with each other, there are unreasonable countries who want to keep polluting for short term benefit"

We felt like, maybe that climate conference wasn't enough - but it was the start of some progress. We felt like leaders like Obama where at least trying their best to reduce the effects of Climate Change.


With Trump denying climate change is real, with him appointing climate change denier Myron Ebell as the head of the EPA, with him saying he is looking to abandon the international climate accord things don't look good. What I do hope though is that the left gets outraged, I hope some on the right get outraged too.

Hopefully it inspires people to refuse the status quo, to say that we care about the future of this planet and that we need to take strong action. I hope there are protests all over the world in the streets of every major city. If Trump takes action that will threaten the planet, I hope people wake up and start taking the issue seriously.

You know, the damage he does to the economy and to society can be reversed in maybe 20 years or so (after the next Great Depression starting in 10 to 15 years, inflicted by Trump, is over - unless a new nazi leader stands up). Climate change is almost irreversible, and also the field where global cooperation could lead to less wars and more understanding of eachother. It's crucial that he takes climate change seriously for so many deaths and so much economic damage that can be avoided.
