The Baltic states have good reason to be nervous if Trump is getting cozy with Putin. The Guardian piece on this is good, I've cut/pasted bits of their article here: Putin wants the US to drop sanctions imposed in the wake of Putin’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, seized by undercover Russian special forces. The sanctions, mirrored by the EU, were also punishment for Putin’s covert invasion of eastern Ukraine, in part done by regular troops, in part by “volunteers”. He wants Trump to recognise Russia’s ownership of Crimea – something no major state has done thus far. Annexing chunks of someone else’s territory seems a throwback to a darker age; indeed this is the first time Europe’s borders have been changed by force since 1945. In terms of Syria, Putin will want the US to drop its demand that President Bashar al-Assad leaves power. He will want cooperation in an international war against “terrorists” – meaning anyone who opposes the Assad regime. Lastly, there’s the matter of how the world is divided in the new post-liberal era. The Kremlin feels it is entitled to a sphere of influence. This encompasses the former republics of the Soviet Union, and eastern and central Europe. Moscow ideologues talk of “civilisational spheres” and “pluri-centricism” – code for Russia being a dominant world force on equal terms with the US. Ideally, Putin would like a new version of the 1945 Yalta treaty, in which the US, Soviet Union and Britain carved up post-second-world-war Europe. But, you suspect, he would settle for a deal where Trump implicitly acknowledges that Russia has “legitimate interests” in its former backyard. Trump has already questioned the role of Nato; he said that the US will not defend countries that fail to contribute to Nato coffers. No wonder, then, that the Baltic states are nervous, that EU foreign ministers met in emergency session following Trump’s victory, and that a new foreboding has descended among states bordering Russia. Their fear: that “sphere of influence” means subversion or attack or interference in elections in favour of pro-Kremlin candidates. Also signals that Trump won't do anything about the Iran deal because Iran and Russia are "buddy-buddy" right now. Russia is not a major threat to the US, nor would it have been under a Clinton presidency. Russia is a major threat to Eastern Europe, which it has the power and possibility to invade. Do you know anything about Putin's history and regime? Probably not. Strong, tough guy? He is the complete opposite. He has to respond to every little thing that anyone says about him because he is so thin skinned. He has the mentality of a 10 year old on the playground, kicking and screaming until he gets his way. Luckily for him there are enough uneducated people in this country that will believe anything if you tell them enough times. Im terrified of him in the same way im terrified of that 10 year old with a machine gun. He might just be stupid enough to cause havoc. That doesn't make him tough or strong. The criticisms of Trump getting cosy also isn't based on some fantasy of an idea of Trump, it's based on what we know about Putin and what is happening in the world. In a world where the director of M15 (The British Intelligence) warned of Russia's "Increased aggressiveness" and talked about how the kremlin is using propaganda, espionage, subversion and cyber-attacks to push its foreign policy abroad and in a world where there are more Russian agents in the UK now as there was during the Cold War - you are calling Trump's friendliness with Putin "positive". In a world where Putin is currently keeping nuclear armed missiles on the European NATO boarder you are calling Trump's friendliness with Putin "positive". In a world where France, Denmark, Italy, Germany, Britain and Canada, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia have troops around Europe's border to deter Russian aggression you are calling Trump's friendliness with Putin "positive". How exactly is this positive like you claim? What are the benefit for the U.S? Right now it just seems to be making U.S allies nervous and making the U.S seem like a less trustworthy ally. It also just seems to be making Europe as a whole very nervous. Why exactly do you think this move is positive considering everything going on in Syria, considering Russia's increased aggressiveness in Europe, considering Russia poses a threat to important U.S allies?
