Addison Rae 16,776
Can you even buy awards? I know that it's talked about all the time in a joking way but can an artist actually purchase an award, not to mention such a prestigious award such as VotY? sitting on his lap sipping diet pepsi

freebit 6,240
I think MTV giving Beyonce carte blanche to perform the whole album was unfair to the other artists there (especially since Rihanna was this years honoree). I could see his point if he was criticizing that. Especially since they axed him from the opening in the past so they could take advantage of using the publics morbid curiosity about 2007 Britney to generate ratings. However, what I'm getting from this is: an award is warranted whenever Beyonce goes up against others Kanye doesn't like, or care about, but heaven forbid Beyonce win a trophy over Kanye himself. 3 hours ago, Bebe said: lol, I love Kanye. Say what you want, but he is a great producer and an incredible musician. He is a genius and one of the most influential producers ever in hip-hop. He might be OTT, he might go on rants but it's like - it doesn't work both ways.People like Kanye's work because he is a transgressive, opinionated, controversial and braggadocious artist who truly works to push the boundaries in his work. At the same time though people seem to want this artist to be demure, respectful, mellow and polite outside of that space. Like, of course Kanye is a raging egomaniac - of course he goes on rants like this. Of course he is constantly getting himself in trouble for saying things he shouldn't say. The same qualities that make him arrogant and crazy outside of his work make him as good as he is with his music and art. "I doubt Taylor would approve the lyrics to famous" teas I completely agree with the bold. That said, I find his arguments flimsy, and what he's stood up against seems to be more based on his own personal petty vendettas than anything else. 2004 Kanye I could mostly agree with, but I find 2011 Kanye and beyond a narcissist that doesn't like to think outside of his own bubble, further over-indulged and validated by the ~edgy~ Vice/Pitchfork circlejerk and the people who like to lol whenever he says something outrageous. I love when people dare to actually express an original opinion that goes against the consensus (I love Pauline Kael for example), but so far Kanye has rallied against the idea of racism, declaring it a thing of the past ("it's more classism now" - interesting since he, a famous rich man, is afforded a more privileged life most other POC aren't as lucky to have); he equates the criticisms of his clothing line to racism in songs like New Slaves, yet doesn't seem to even consider that his designs are uninspired Helmut Lang rehashes. He really could have used his influence to support new talented black designers, but he'd rather do it himself. Also, getting himself worked up and caring more about Frank Ocean's Grammy chances than Frank Ocean himself - who doesn't even GAF, (hence Frank purposely not submitting his own work) was just embarrassing. He's almost 40-years old, I would have expected him to stop giving a **** about what happens at the VMAs by now. They are a lower-tier award show, occasionally peppered with big stars, but mostly full of teen stars, and were originally aimed at having good, trashy fun. He validates these meaningless awards by caring so much about them.

Oh it's totally cool to criticise his arguments, I agree I think that what he has to say about race is disappointing and I think most of the time he spouts nonsense. I just don't hold it against him that much. Like I'll criticise his words and actions when he goes overboard, but I can separate that from his work. At the end of the day I can take his misguided rants telling other POC that racism is over, I can take his egotistical and occasionally nonsensical rants, I can deal with him occasionally interrupting an award show to determine that the prize winner is not worthy of the award. It's less a defence of his actions, for which he should make amends, but more so an understanding that if I want a transgressive, opinionated, controversial artist (and I do) then I need to understand that they will probably also act like an opinionated, controversial person outside of their work and sometimes I will disagree with their opinionated rants or with their self indulgent behaviour.
