The Greatest Song Ever Written?

In your opinion, what is the greatest song ever written?

I always have to go back to Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd. I think the music, lyrics and production makes the greatest song of all time. David Gilmour said that the opening of the song is supposed to sound as if a kid was listening to the radio and then tries to join in on guitar with it. This resonated with me so much, I used to get one of my parent's old records out and lay on the floor and listen to them with my headphones on, then when I started guitar I always tried to join in with CCR albums or Neil Young. No other song makes me HAVE to listen to it fully when it comes on, and completely takes me over the way this one does.

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
And how we found
The same old fears
Wish you were here

For me,the greatest song of all time is the pa-pa-pa-pa-pa perfect Illusion song and Jewels n Drugs by Lady Gaga is also almost at the same level.

The Surrealist

Billy Joel - Vienna

Slow down you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart tell me,
Why are you still so afraid? (mmmmm)

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You better cool it off before you burn it out
You got so much to do and only
So many hours in a day (Ay)

But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through (Oooh)
When will you realize... Vienna waits for you?

Slow down you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight (tonight)

Too bad, but it's the life you lead
You're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong
You know you can't always see when you're right (you're right)

You got your passion, you got your pride
But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true (Oooh)
When will you realize... Vienna waits for you?

Slow down you crazy child
Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while
It's alright, you can afford to lose a day or two (oooh)
When will you realize... Vienna waits for you?

And you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through (oooh)
Why don't you realize... Vienna waits for you?

When will you realize... Vienna waits for you?

I have to say Hallellujah by Cohen. He deserved the Nobel more than Dylan. I'm still in shock for his death.

Incredible song, it takes a special kind of person to see the world as he did in his songs and poetry, I was shocked by his death too.
