The EU is the biggest economy in the world and has the potential to create the greatest army in the world. I don't think that's necessary, but it's important that the EU can't rely on the US as much as now. And let's be honest, the EU is pretty much the only 'morally superior' nation at the moment (and Canada! Sweden, Finland)

There are some countries here with military schools for children.

There are countries in EU which are very homophobic

Here are countries with right-wing governments

Here are som countries without free press

You can not generalize that simple,  europe and EU  are very diverse.

And the EU is far away to be a nation, especially in collective consciousness it's very far away. Yes, the identity as a European has increased, but that does not mean that it is already a nation

I wrote 'nation' just for the controversy I know the EU isn't a nation yet and that pride is such a strong emotion that people aren't just gonna watch a debate on TV and think: 'oh hey! A federal Europe, I'm convinced!'

 

But to your main point, yes there are a lot of countries in Europe that have big right-wing and homophobic/fundamentalist movements like Poland, but those countries have the least power. If you look at the actions of the EU as a whole, you see that European countries give the most foreign aid, participate in the least wars and take the most refugees with the best refugee camps.
