NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An architect of anti-immigration efforts who says he is advising President-elect Donald Trump said the new administration could push ahead rapidly on construction of a U.S.-Mexico border wall without seeking immediate congressional approval.

Kobach told Reuters last Friday that the immigration group had discussed drafting executive orders for the president-elect's review "so that Trump and the Department of Homeland Security hit the ground running."

To implement Trump's call for "extreme vetting" of some Muslim immigrants, Kobach said the immigration policy group could recommend the reinstatement of a national registry of immigrants and visitors who enter the United States on visas from countries where extremist organizations are active.

Kobach helped design the program, known as the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System, while serving in Republican President George W. Bush's Department of Justice after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States by al Qaeda militants.

Under NSEERS, people from countries deemed "higher risk" were required to undergo interrogations and fingerprinting on entering the United States. Some non-citizen male U.S. residents over the age of 16 from countries with active militant threats were required to register in person at government offices and periodically check in.

NSEERS was abandoned in 2011 after it was deemed redundant by the Department of Homeland Security and criticized by civil rights groups for unfairly targeting immigrants from Muslim- majority nations.

Title is a little misleading.

They want immigrants from dangerous (high risk) areas of the world to have different hoops and more hoops to jump through than the rest of the world, which makes sense. If there was an active war in my country involving the US, I would expect to face different immigration rules because I could be a threat. It's common sense really.

1. Building a wall won't stop illegal immigration. 2. If bad "Muslims" want to get into a country, they'll find a different way. ISIS will just radicalize people in other countries where there is no "high risk". There's really no indication that people have been coming to the US with bad intentions as well. Most terrorist attacks here in the US have included terrorists that were born, raised, and radicalized within the country. Some of those individuals have traveled to the Middle East/Asia and came back radicalized, but how do you even monitor that? I don't really see an actual solution to this.

That includes Britain and France. Netherlands too. Religious tests are coming for all "Middle Eastern" looking.

Reminds me of a Black Mirror episode I just watched called “Men Against Fire”

Basically soldiers in a war are trying to kill off these creatures called "roaches." They basically look like nasty zombie creatures. The soldiers have technologically advanced eye implants that help them with aiming, etc. Come to find out in the end that these creatures that they're brutally murdering are actually humans, and the eye implants dehumanize them and make them look like monsters. The only reason they're at war to kill them is because they have "bad genetics"

I don't know, the word "registry" just sounds like cattle herding.

to your homegrown terrorism point, i don't see how this would help to prevent more incidents from happening. i would think that that would involve a more comprehensive sense of inclusion. imo if they keep isolating our muslim people, making them feel unwelcome in their own country, they are asking to get burned.

That's true. I mean, upping the security for immigrants coming from high risk countries is okay I guess. But what does that mean for Americans traveling abroad as well? There's lots of crime here. There should be high security wherever we go actually. However, it's still not going to stop terrorism. Targeting Muslims is not the answer especially when there's equal or even more risk of other terrorism/crime in our daily lives.
