The EU makes laws that the citizens of any of the member countries can't vote on, politicians in member countries can't vote on them either; leading to laws appearing in countries that don't want these laws but have to enforce them. The only reason it still exists today is because leaving the EU can have catastrophic effects to a country's economy if they don't perfectly execute a leaving plan that allows them to operate their economy independently with nothing propping it up, which is insanely difficult. (And even then, if you have this amazing perfect plan, investors don't like risk and will not give you money.) Feels like Hollande started ages ago. 4 hours ago, Benji said: France is pretty conservative in general, it's cool to go see the sights but I can't say I wanted to stay any longer than the few weekends I spent there. I have no idea, I agree though A term lasts 5 years, before 2000 it used to last 7 years but the more times goes by the more power and influence Marine Lepen and her party get. ‘If religion be the cause of disunity, then irreligion is surely to be preferred.’ ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

There's a lot of euroscepticism across Europe because people hate feeling like their own country is being led by people they haven't elected. The Union is far too interfering as it is right now. It's important we all keep good relations with each other and enjoy being neighbours but we should stop telling each other what to do. The only thing that matters is the single market because no one wants to hurt a country that is helping them by buying or selling. There's no need for the union to be as interfering as it is. But in all honesty, the EU only works on things that are better done on the EU level: - regulations, because regulations in individual countries would just make the company go to a different country within the single market - trade policy, because it increases negotiating power - agriculture, because if all countries had their own farmer benefits it would just lead to a race to the top/bottom (which one?) - intelligence, because French and Belgian intelligence need to cooperate to fight Europe-wide terrorist networks - border protections, because migrants that risk their lives on a boat to Greece and Lampedusa almost all end up in western Europe. For the future I think a European grading system for schools, a European defense, a foreign policy union and more economic cooperation are necessary for the EU to provide even more benefits than before. I'd say the only unsuccessful project so far is the Euro, but it just needs more time and actually more political/economic/policy integration to work. (And even then, if you have this amazing perfect plan, investors don't like risk and will not give you money.) First paragraph: EU =/= Eurozone. Greece wasn't paid money, but lended money. Not the EU, but the Eurozone and IMF lended the money to Greece. Greece has high taxes already. I don't think it's responsible to call the country with the longest working week in Europe and the country that suffered the most from the Eurocrisis (and of course from their own political and financial elite). Most people there can't help it that the government screwed them up. I understand that you might actually be talking about the money that goes to places like Lithuania from a country like the UK. This is only a small portion of GDP, and helps the British economy by creating a bigger exporting market and reducing migration from those countries (thus increasing wages for the 'normal' British people). Second paragraph: Every law is passed by either the European Parliament (voted) or the Council ((elected) leader of every country). That means that every rule and regulation is a democratic one. I would prefer less Council and more Parliament importance, though. Third paragraph: Concludingly, the EU is good for the economy. Even in a rich country. I wasn't blaming the citizens of Greece I was blaming their government and its well documented that Greece had made little to no effort in collecting their taxes from the population. Whether or not their working week was long, they paid no tax, and Greece paid nothing back from their borrowings. I did mean to imply Greece & other countries are lended money, but they are given way more than they can ever pay back and it creates a system where each country in the EU is borrowing more than they can pay back until a point where investors just stop giving them money; which opens every country in the EU up to economical collapse & even the world. Having so many economies so directly intertwined is NEVER ever a good thing. Especially since the EU can't actually control how much each country lends & how they pay it back. There are economic benefits, the biggest one being the single market, for sure. But its such a broken relationship and so vulnerable to collapse if any country can get out of it without collapsing their own economy they'd all run packing. Here's a (old) video about it, but it's good at explaining it all:
