RochestrMonstr 3,216
I'm honestly just curious here, I'm not trying to be negative or rude to anyone. This has been something I've wondered since the snippets came out. Why do people say Joanne is not a pop album? Joanne is a pop album, with influences from many different genres. There are a couple of songs that are influenced by country, but there are also a couple influenced by rock, jazz, even a Bollywood one. They're all very clearly pop songs, with distinct pop hooks. None of the songs come anywhere near fully crossing into any genre except Pop! So why do people keep referring to Gaga's other eras as "pop" eras, but not this one? Again, im honestly just curious. HOTNebraskaGuy 19,547
Because of one of these two reasons: #1: They only like pop music that sounds like TFM and any time of pop music that doesn't sound like it will be shunned and denied of being labeled "pop". Or #2: They absolutely love Joanne but don't want to classify it as pop because they're too edgy for that. They want to lie to themselves by calling it a rock album because they've been desperately waiting for a rock album from Gaga and think maybe by being delusional it will ease the pain (this is me). One, five, ten lay a million on me
Squeeshy Keety 9,908
People equate genres with the samples and instruments a song uses is my guess Genres change quickly as well, so I understand the confusion. The pop from my childhood is nothing like Closer *obligatory shivers* for example. Spoiler I know nothing about music, though. Don't come for me if I am totally wrong They / Them 🏳️🌈
Guest ARTPOPSlays
Idk tbh Its literally a pop album and people call it a full country album and I'm like And even if it was a different genre? Who cares?? People act like it's a bad thing, but as long as the musics good that's all that matters
President Trump 3,508
Because it's a rap album. DEAL Ma ma pa pa pa
Yo GagaGaga 6,541
I think people use pop to say commercial, and since this album wasn't meant to top the charts or be very commercial then people don't like to use pop
Mister Gaga 22,930
Delusional and ignorant monsters. Joanne is 100% pop, and pop is not EDM.
Poissonche 12,365
It is most definitely a pop album. However, it does feel weird to classify it in the same category as, let's say, Glory and Dangerous Woman for example. It's because the definition of pop music is so vague. When you say country, I have an idea what it's going to sound like. Same for rock, rap, jazz, folk, metal, etc. But pop music just stands for "popular". The thing we should ask ourselves is, "what the **** is pop music?".

migamiga 12,102
As tony would say: there are no genres. Music is either good or it isn't. The only reason they classify genres is to market the music

Heidi Montag 409
Because it isn't. Stay pressed. Spoiler Jk I agree with you I think the only reason is because it's such a different sound compared to her previous albums, and if Pop = EDM to you, well, then Joanne is not Pop Buy SUPERFICIAL on iTunes
Guest
Joanne is pop from the start of the record to the very last second. There are just so many new influences that she hasn't experimented with before, so it seems so "un-pop" for her. A twangy guitar riff doesn't make a song country, nor does a heavy guitar riff make a song rock. People don't seem to understand that. Solo Gaga does pop. Period.
