Media manipulation

I think we can all agree that he's not the greatest speaker and his mouth seems to run faster that his brain. But not 100% of what he says is hateful like the media portrays him to be. Don't believe everything you hear. Question the sources, do your research, and listen for context.

Yes it's true that media is making him look worse than he seems, but he still is bad, not as bad as his Vice-President though.

The media manipulates everything.

How many times was Bernie Sanders labeled as socialist by the media just to tarnish his reputation?

How many times were Hillary's abilities questioned by the media based on what her husband did?

The media isn't unbiased but Trump gave them a lot of material too. He is a horrible person with or without the media.

No way am I going to watch an eight minute video of Trump talking.

What's the point here? That out of the millions of minutes we have of him speaking, not all of them are racist and hateful?

Okay, but lets also look at the full facts:

Seddique Mir Mateen, father of Orlando gunman Omar Mateen, once campaigned in the United States for current Afghan President Ashraf Ghani -- seen as a moderate leader -- who appeared on his program in 2014. This wasn't a problem with the screening process. Seddique was already in the country supporting moderate leaders.

But as CBS reported:

"But since then Seddique has turned against Ghani in both his broadcasts and numerous videos posted to a Facebook account.

In his Facebook videos, the alleged gunman's father has often appeared wearing a military uniform and declaring himself the leader of a "transitional revolutionary government" of Afghanistan. He claims to have his own intelligence agency and close ties to the U.S. Congress -- assets he says he will use to subvert Pakistani influence and take control of Afghanistan.

After watching his videos -- none of which were recorded in English -- CBS News' Ahmad Mukhtar said it seemed possible that Seddique Mateen is delusional. "He thinks he runs a government in exile and will soon take the power in Kabul in a revolution," notes Mukhtar."

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/orlando-shooting-omar-mateen-father-seddique-mateen-taliban-god-punish-gays/

It seems very obvious that he is suffering from delusions. The man thinks he has his own intelligence agency and thinks he has inside men in congress. He thinks he runs a government and will take power in Kabul after a revolution.

This wasn't a problem with the U.S screening him and failing to see he was radical, this was a problem with Seddique once being moderate but having severe mental health issues.

Trump lies to his supporters and gives them the 'facts' without context. This wasn't a failure of the screening process, Seddique was let in as a moderate.

Beyond that, Thousands upon thousands of immigrants don't share the same 'thought process' of a 'savage killer'. That's awful to say even in full context. It's dangerous, divisive rhetoric that only serves to create and nurture fear over muslim immigrants. A statement like that is indefensible, even in it's full context it is horrifying.

The screening process in the US is already very thorough and extreme. It can't get any more intense, I mean this 4 minute video by John Oliver is funny and informative:

Hillary Clinton doesn't want radical islamists to enter the country, she doesn't want people in who want to kill gays and enslave women. That's not what the Obama administration is doing either! By saying that, he is spreading fear and racist, islamophobic  rhetoric against muslim immigrants! Again, in context what he is saying is still f*cking awful and indefensible!

So I agree, question the sources, do your research, and listen for context. If you do you will see that Trump is an awful racist.

All media is biased and it goes both ways. People want to blame just the "liberal media", but have they watched Fox News?

I agree, specially with platforms like Fox News, things were pretty balanced.

When the FBI reopened de email investigation it was freaking everywhere.

Maybe they dedicated more time to Trump, but when they talked about Hillary it wasnt to praise her.

The ones we should blame are the people themselves who made the storm and turned this election into a meme, voters from both sides claiming facts, and an umprecedented division, wonder how all of this would have turned out if there was no internet and the media was fair, we would be looking at Sanders or Cruz winning probably

Exactly! I tried to do the same, but I couldn't stomach it. I watched 55+ year old men mock and belittle Miley Cyrus' video of her expressing her feelings in regards to the election. They called her a baby and sore loser while they smirked and acted like Republicans were so mature and poised after Obama won twice. Of course they cut out the part where she mentions "accepting Trump as the president". I was so done after that.

It's funny how the same people call "liberal media" biased. I end up watching BBC news because it feels less biased even though I am sure there is some skew.

To comment specifically on site like Now This though, I don't like them - I actually despise such sites - but I understand why they are there and I think they do some good. I don't think their intention is to be malicious and edit information to mislead.

You could have a 25-30 minute video that explains Seddique was a moderate muslim who became mentally ill and deluded after moving to the US and you could explain that therefore any screening process that rejected Seddique at that time would reasonably reject all moderate muslims, who are not going to become radicalised. That video could explain how there are not 'thousands upon thousands' of immigrants being let in that share the same radicalised thought process as the Orlando shooter and how that rhetoric is used to demonise muslims. That video could show the rise in hate crimes (by 89%) against muslims that occurred during the campaign. That video could take time explaining the current vetting process and how thorough it is. That video could explain that Obama isn't letting in thousands of violent, extreme muslims into the country and could explain how that misinformation and extreme rhetoric nurtures fear towards muslim immigrants. In the end that video would communicate: Donald Trump is extreme, he is Islamophobic, he would ban moderate muslims from entering the country, he is spreading fear that all muslims (or a large amount) are dangerous.  Maybe they could even manage to push the video down to 15 minutes and still keep it all in context.

The problem for Now This though, is that they deal with clickable, easily sharable news content. People are not sitting through a 30-25 minute video. People are not expecting others to sit through a video that long either. Even if it somehow gets cut down to 15 minutes that's too long. 1-2 minutes is too long for sites like Now This. They want to communicate that information, that the audience would receive in the 30 minute video, in a few seconds. Inevitably that leads to a lack of context in some instances and some information being left out. In the end the message is the same as in the long video with full context, but it also does sort of remove any grey - it makes the issue black and white. It's not the sort of content people should be relying upon for information.

You can look at any clip from Now This and I have no doubt it will be similar. Stripped of context and designed to get the main points out efficiently in a few seconds.

Um...do you know what a socialist is? Bernie Sanders is a socialist. That's not a bad thing but its perceived as a bad thing thanks to South American socialist dictators. The perception of the word socialist is at fault.

Trump used inflammatory language through his campaign. He knew exactly how the media was going to react to it. He manipulated the media to his whim then blamed the media for everything. Thats like hitting a glass with a bat then blaming the glass for breaking.

Lets try to end this thing where the media is to blame. They are not to blame. Donald Trump knows exactly what he did

Hillary's health was questioned by the media thanks to Donald, her sanity was questioned by the media thanks to Donald, Hillary not separating from her husband was questioned by the media thanks to Donald and the week before the election during early voting Comey sent a letter to congress, which then surprise surprise was nothing. The media was manipulated heavily by Trump and the Republican Party.

Lets try to stop these threads where the media is to blame for everything.

They are not to blame. Donald Trump knows exactly what he did and the Republicans know exactly what they did.

For God sakes this Hillary found out about Comey's letter to the Republicans on the NEWS! Just like the rest of America. If there was truly something on those emails wouldn't they have notified her first. Wake up people everyone got played by the Republicans in this election.

And now Anonymous is supposedly on Trump's side. What a load of sh!t.

Try Brian William's show on MSNBC. He's good at staying a journalist first and the regulars he has on the show are calm and moderate, both left and right. Also, the nightly news with Lester Holt on NBC is good just for a overview of what's happening and they try to just report the news.

Fox News is really bad, it's ten times worse than CNN and MSNBC put together. CNN Sunday morning has some good, informative shows.
