Hm? The electoral college is good. If not for the electoral college, anyone outside of major cities would have no say over how their country is governed. The country folks and small states would be forgotten. It works in much the same way here in Canada and it works great.

People are only complaining because this time it resulted in Trump :rip: if it worked for Clinton they would take the opposite position.

But over 85% of America lives in those major cities. It's stupid that a bunch of hillbillies get to decide the fate of the entire country.

So what? :rip:

Let's put it this way, would you like Texas to decide the result of each election?

Actually, here in Canada, Ontario has way too much power and those people decide things for the rest of the country, who usually have very different opinions, which is completely unfair. They spend most of the nation's tax dollars in the East and ignore the West.

Proportional representation is overrated!

But Ontario SHOULD have more power. A third of Canada lives there, so of course its opinions should count more than a state that has less than 10% of Ontario's population.

Also I don't get your point about Texas, given that currently Florida pretty much decides the result of each election.

I disagree! The country is too big for proportional representation and so is America.

Benjamin Franklin:

“If a proportional representation takes place, the small States contend that their liberties will be in danger. If an equality of votes is to be put in its place, the large States say their money will be in danger. When a broad table is to be made, and the edges of planks do not fit the artist takes a little from both, and makes a good joint.”

Get my facts straight? :air: There's pros and cons for the electoral college but that's the system in use. Maybe if Hillary's campaign wasn't as weak as it was or maybe if people put this much time and effort into promoting their choice before the vote, the outcome could have been different.

You said the PEOPLE chose Trump which is false. The electoral college did. So my statement stands.

The electoral college hasn't actually chosen Trump yet, which is why these petitions are important!

The electoral college means the entire land is given a voice, not just dense cities that will swing primarily one way or another. Whilst I mostly disagree with this system, it means the average thought of each state is heard. If Hillary won this way, no one here would be kicking up a fuss. I am all for removing the electoral college but it can't be done just because people disagree with it right after an election didn't go the way they wanted it to.

I get your "statement" but you can express yourself without sounding like an asshole. No one will take you seriously with an attitude like that.

i understand what you're saying but you have to look at the facts: it burned democrats two times in such a short period of time. it is an archaic system, a vote should equal a vote in the modern democracy, it really should. i was not vocal about it before because when you look at history it doesn't seem to happen that often (5 times now) but in a country so divided i see it happening again in the next 20 years unless things change. it is particularly important after an election such as this when a complete mad man (not your average republican, a man in fact off and on despised and isolated by his own party) wins the presidency when a majority of americans did not vote for him.

I agree with what's bolded but trying to overturn the result this way is not going to work. You can't change the rules of a game after you lose, you should have just played better when you could have done.

Like I said, I am all for removing the electoral college but it will not be done to overturn a result otherwise it gives out the wrong message and basically undermines the entire system.

oh i see what you're saying. yes, i agree with what you're saying i didn't intend to mean to change the results of the election (though i wouldn't mind it to be quite honest) but what i meant is to stand up and remove it for the future, to stand up now because it is now clearer than ever that it is not helping.

All of this arguing about how its "fair" that the electoral college exists confuses me... I think there's a bigger problem.

I think the real injustice is that one party specifically prays on and raises an uninformed, ignorant public, then feeds them lines to scare them into voting for them. If a majority of the country or whatever voted for Trump under the false impression that he was "not an establishment candidate" who somehow just didn't actually believe anything he ever said and had no intentions of simply stepping in line with the Republican parties platform, then they were severely and intentionally misinformed. How is that fair?

I'm not saying its likely or feasible that the entire country can always be informed on the issues or whatever, but we can take steps to prevent media and politicians from obfuscating or literally lying about the reality of things in order to convince voters to get behind them. It's evil.

Say what ever you like about Liberal and Conservatives ideologically, in practice however there is a clear trend in which one is more likely to resort to misdirection and sometimes even outright lying to get their point across. For starters, Fox News should literally be decried as an unethical news source and never be trusted, and there should be more monitoring of "truth" especially during elections. It shouldn't only be liberal media sources that are "fact/truth-checking" candidates during debates and public speeches. It also shouldn't also just be liberal media that is forwarding these things on social media.

When Donald Trump and the GOP can literally convince millions of Americans to go from loving/tolerating Clinton to thinking she has committed the most heinous national security-related crime in American history and that she deserves to be in jail.... when they can convince people that she's a rape apologist, that she's somehow responsible for the Iraq war, ISIS (thats more complicated), Benghazi, even every single thing that Bill Clinton did in his presidency, we have a problem. So many people voted on what they were told was true or likely, and not what was real.

~~~
About the electoral college, I'm conflicted about its usage, I think it should be reformed, but how it's done is probably going to be more involved than simply abolishing it :emma:
