Merkel: I will only work with Trump if he supports freedom and democracy

"Angela Merkel has said she will only cooperate with President-elect Donald Trump if he respects the shared values of democracy and freedom between the US and Germany.

The German Chancellor said: “Germany and America are bound together by values – democracy, freedom, respecting the rule of law, people’s dignity regardless of their origin, the colour of their skin, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political views.”

Relations between Mr Trump and Ms Merkel have been strained in the past. He appears to disagree with the Chancellor welcoming Syrian refugees to Germany. He himself has proposed deporting millions of immigrants from the US.

When Ms Merkel won the 2015 Time magazine Person of the Year for her “moral leadership” in wanting to take in refugees, Mr Trump tweeted: “I told you Time Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favourite.

“They picked [the] person who is ruining Germany,” he said.

Time magazine’s reason for picking Angela Merkel as its Person of the Year:

“At a moment when much of the world is once more engaged in a furious debate about the balance between safety and freedom, the Chancellor is asking a great deal of the German people, and by their example, the rest of us as well. To be welcoming. To be unafraid. To believe that great civilisations build bridges, not walls, and that wars are won both on and off the battlefield.

“By viewing the refugees as victims to be rescued rather than invaders to be repelled, the woman raised behind the Iron Curtain gambled on freedom. The pastor’s daughter wielded mercy like a weapon. You can agree with her or not, but she is not taking the easy road. Leaders are tested only when people don’t want to follow. For asking more of her country than most politicians would dare, for standing firm against tyranny as well as expedience and for providing steadfast moral leadership in a world where it is in short supply, Angela Merkel is TIME’s Person of the Year."
