They elect the president through electors and each state is assigned a fixed amount of electors. The person who has the most votes overall in one state, will win over ALL electors of the state (even if the results are very tight). In the end, the person that has won over the most electors, will be the next president of the USA. Some states are typically more Democrat (California, New York), some are typically more Republican (Texas, Alaska), however there are states that flip-flop between the two.
