Whether you want to be shook or not is really up to you 1. "The Redskins Rule" What is it? The Washington Redskins are an American football team. If they win their last home game before election day, then the party currently in power stays in power. If they lose, the opposition takes over. How accurate is it? It's been correct for every election since 1936, except for the 2000 and 2012 elections. Who does it say will win? Clinton. The Redskins defeated the Philadelphia Eagles this year, 27-20. 2. Halloween mask sales What is it? Simple: whichever candidate's Halloween masks sell the most for Halloween wins the election. How accurate is it? It's been correct for every election since 1980. Who does it say will win? Trump. According to leading costume retail chain Spirit Halloween, Trump masks outsold Clinton's, 55 to 45%. 3. "7-Election" Cups What is it? Convenient store chain 7-Eleven offers election-themed coffee cups to their customers. You can pick the cup you want based on who you plan to vote for. How accurate is it? It correctly predicted the results of the last four elections. Who does it say will win? Clinton. 31% went with the blue "Hillary" cup, 29% with the red "Trump" cup, while 40% went with the neutral purple cup 4. The Scholastic Student vote What is it? The school publication Scholastic News holds a student vote, where kids across the country get to "cast their ballots" for one of the candidates in a mock election. How accurate is it? It's been correct since 1940, except for two years: 1948 (Truman vs Dewey -- Truman defeated Dewey in a surprise victory. The Chicago Tribune newspaper was so sure Dewey was going to win that they printed "Dewey defeats Truman" headlines beforehand ), and 1960 (Kennedy vs Nixon, which was an extremely close election.)Who does it say will win? Clinton. 5. The Summer Olympics Host What is it? If the host country of the Summer Olympics in the election year has hosted before, the incumbent party wins the popular vote. If the host country has never hosted an Olympics before, the opposition wins. How accurate is it? It's been correct for every election since 1960 except 1988. Who does it say will win? Trump. Brazil has never hosted an Olympic games before. And the 2020 Olympics are in Japan, which has hosted the games before, so that's a two-term Trump presidency And now a not-so-bizarre factor: Ohio. The election results in this state have correctly predicted the outcome of every election since 1960. If you go back to 1896, it's only had two misses (1944 and 1960. I don't know what happened in 1944, but recall that 1960 was a very close election). This "bellwether state" (as its known) has the longest perfect streak when it comes to predictions.
