Quark 7,098
o<(0_0)>o Everytime there is a discussion here about how Gaga influenced Crazy/avant-garde Fashion, dance/EDM music, theatrical performances, and the resurgence of movie-like music videos, many here always say "but Gaga did not invent insert title ". And what I have to say is yes, she did not invent any of this but this does not mean that Gaga wasn't the one to popularize all of these and make these things normal and acceptable. Since 2009, everyone that wears crazy fashion is compared to Gaga for a reason. At the same time wearing crazy/avant-garde fashion today is pretty normal, no one really thinks about it twice anymore, and that is because Gaga made it the standard. As far the dance/EDM music, many artist and DJ have come forward to talk about how Gaga popularized these genres in the US and how Gaga was basically "pre-EDM". Theatrical performances and epic music videos (music videos by Kanye, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Katy, The Weekend, eat.) also experience an era of ressurgence thanks to Gaga. People have done many of the things I mentioned before Gaga, but no one pushed the limits and raised the bar like Gaga did. And that is why she is the one that influenced everyone else and not the people that might have "invented' these.

boobtank 9,090
Tbh, I've hardly seen anyone on here deny Gaga's influence... if there are members that can't see the clear influence she's had on popular culture, they need new prescription glasses and hearing aids. Jed 7,716
BEcause she didn't popularize it she was just the first to do it during a time where Jordin Sparks and Leona Lewis were slow singing our country to sleep. Other acts have had huge music during times of slow trends (Janet during the control era for one example) so she didn't set the trend of being a trend setter if you know what I'm saying (obviously she's had an influence on people but it wasn't as culture shifting as some people make it seem - like when they say the fame monster is the best pop album ever)

River 117,629
o<(^_^)>o Because some people can't make the separation between "invention" to "influence". Pop culture is old, very old.. it's kinda impossible to make something new, but you can take the old and make it even better and this is what Gaga is doing. You can't deny the fashion influence, the music videos influence and even the sound and the genres.. But Gaga was never the 1st to do it.. So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

No but in early interviews people would say things like "who else would wear a hood like this!" About her outfits when literally grace jones wore clothes like that for years. my point wasn't that a bunch of others are like her my point was that she is one of the people that were influenced so her contemporaries following "her" are actually following trends that have happened before honestly it's all a cycle and if you don't think I'm right look at the post BTW backlash and her style at the moment. Down the line someone will be kooky again but it can only come after a long period of ballads and stuff like that.
