Meruk Holland 2,358 Posted November 1, 2016 Share Posted November 1, 2016 The thing that everyone seems to forget is that, yes, we are voting between Hillary and Trump, and their personal beliefs will impact some of their decisions, but really, they are just the mascots for their parties. Democrat Presidents push Democrat policies, Republican Presidents push Republican policies...generally (when they don't, it's big news). Trump may be in favor of gay rights, and Hillary may not genuinely be so, but they will go with their party on these issues. It's for this very reason why it's important to vote for other political positions (such as Senators) even if you refuse to vote for either of these candidates for President. Here's the thing, if he still was advocating those things, then I would agree with you but when he said he'd sign that anti LGBT bill, he pretty much backward on all he said about not firing them from their jobs and stuff like that. I gave him credit when he said those things you quoted but he's since changed his policy, which is unfortunate. and it's hardly purist to not praise Trump for gay rights, he'd be a disaster for them. It's about him being the first Republican nominated for the office of the President of the United States who has a nuanced, even gay-friendly, positions on a number of issues facing the lives of gay Americans. I didn't say he was an ideal candidate for the progression of gay rights, he is still subjectively bad when it comes to many LGBT issues, and he is certainly far worse than Hillary. I think the problem here is that some of you are to young to understand what it was like to be a young gay kid watching yourself be demonized and demoralized in Presidential campaigns. Every four years gay kids had to sit through being talked about as if they were deviants. That changed in this election. Gay men have been used as scapegoats by far right populist political figures for hundreds of years, the fact that Donald Trump is breaking that long held tradition is noteworthy.
