Do you even understand American culture? Do you even understand that certain words have been twisted and given terrible meaning? For example, the word retarded is no longer used as "mentally retarded" or describes someone with a disability. Instead the word has been twisted as a joke and/or slur. I can't expect a foreigner to understand racism in America. The fact is is that Trump profiled this guy. DO NOT even try to make an excuse for that.

What's the difference between "retarded" and "thug"? Simply that "retarded" is generally seen as offensive in Canada, and "thug" isn't, because we have people with mental disabilities, but we don't have the same racial dynamics and demographics as in America!

No one said it's inherently racist, but that how it is used today in America (and other places, but America especially) carries a very strongly charged racist undertone. E.g, people see black people and pre-judge them as violent because of the culture shift occuring at the moment. In this sense, the word refers to "shady black person" and not "violent criminal"; it implies people are conflating the two, which is racist  

Also, the point of the OP is to highlight the racist attitudes and behavior of this man who claims to have all the minorities "loving him", but acts against their favor at every single step of the way. (Hence his extremely low polling with minorities group by group  ) 

It doesn't matter if thug is only racist sometimes or somewhere, words dont just only have 2 or 3 definitions and all other usages are abberations of the norm, the norm doesn't exist, words have meaning because we give them meaning and we change and alter them all of the time. It's just how things work  

Choosing to use words for now outdated meanings is totally your prerogative, but its definitely culturally and socially insensitive to specifically choose to use words that you know have been negatively charged to dehumanize and discriminate against groups of people.

To your point, as society evolves, words evolve with it. Certain words get bogged down with connotations that can be offensive even though their literal definition isn't. However, you are correct here:

We live so close but our societies vary drastically. You're not wrong to say that "thug" doesn't have a racist undertone to it in Canada (at least, I'm assuming so since you probably know your area more than I do), but that's really besides the point since we're talking about what Trump said here, in the States, to a black man that was clearly not there to cause trouble
