She didn't, so I think they are going to rethink her promotion campaign and well whether we like it or not she's coming to slay commercially in 2017. . She's driven by commercial success even if it means being inauthentic with her craft. Good point. On a related note I feel like she's also waiting to see how the public sees JOANNE. She loves hits and be commercially successful, but in some of her latest performances, you can tell she is attempting stripped down styles (like that Dark horse orchestra where she wears a pink dress with a huge bow ) and see if she could be respected for artistry as well. Just a hunch. Flyin' like a 1000 Doves

Yeah no I know the story about Applause & Roar, but I truly think Katy took advantage of Gaga's downfall, I mean, G.U.Y was released first, it had credits, right? The Birthday video, which was released afterwards, had credits... soz but no it's just too coincidental as a "slap in the face" You can't seriously be using "they both have credits" as an argument? StrawberryBlond 14,590
Rise was intended to be a stand-alone single and was never meant to be on a future album, she confirmed that verbally. But...let's not pretend that this was a big "testing the waters" moment. To see if a song surprise released with limited promo, with a more mature approach and not an obvious chart hit could be successful. It wasn't. And this likely got her team worried because I have a feeling that her new album is aiming to be her most mature work to date, after being criticised for making music aimed at kids for so long. After the failure of 3/5 pop singles from Prism, it was likely decided for the best that she had to try something new and grow up a bit. Which is partly why I think the album's taking so long, she's really trying to do something different. But now the problem is that we've already seen this approach not being welcomed by her fans or the public. So maybe she is being pressured to go more generic, at least for a single or two and things have required a re-work? Regardless, I think she's in a big catch 22 situation - her old pop style has fallen out of favour but she's never been a hit with her ballads (except when they're part of a mega successful album). So she may as well just do her own thing. Put it this way - if she comes back all bubblegum pop, she won't be welcomed with open arms. The public have got bored of this style from her and critics will start to note that she's not progressing her sound and her music isn't representative of a woman in her 30's. Now that she's hit the big 3-0 everyone is going to demand more artistry from her. That's just how it works for women in music.
MonsterPaws 2,688
It was an Olympics promo single. I think she's still working on her next big release. The other video was probably her own take on the song.

Bette Davis 12,742
I have a feeling she has rethought her direction, but not completely gone back to the drawing board. If I remember correctly she was claiming that she was going to release music that was deeper and more mature. I feel like although Rise was a stand alone single for the Olympics, it was still a test run for a new sound. It wasn't well received and it's affected her approach. Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet.

There were no markings on the single cover and no references in the video to suggest it. It wasn't heavily promoted as that before it was released, so I think that was the casual flick off when it didn't do well commercially. She was very clear about Rice. NOT THE LEAD SINGLE FOR THE NEW ERA, JUST FOR THE OLIMPICS. She reply back a lot about this back in July

It was supposed to be a stand alone single for the olympics. Then she also performed it at the DNC which pissed off NBC because it was supposed to be an exclusive and they didn't want the song attached to any political party because politics gets controversial. In any case, it wasn't supposed to be on any album. I'm just quoting you so you're reminded of this (:
