ApplauseftAdele 4,730
I just listened to the album, and I cant believe I actually love it, something I wouldnt have expected 1 month ago when I was complaining about Gaga going rock... but I really love this new direction. But theres one thing that really stuck out to me in Joanne ... the unedited vocals. Dont get me wrong, I support how gaga wants her music to sound more authentic, but there are some parts where it sounds too "live" and kind of gives the song a messy vibe... for example, the beginning of Diamond Heart. where she sounds really nasal and "off"... or the low notes in Sinners Prayer where she cant quite reach them. While I understand the reasoning behind this, it really is noticible, and I kind of wish she slightly edited it to sound less live. dont drag me

Guest
The vocals are actually my favorite part of the record. It just feels like this huge middle finger to the pop industry that focuses so heavily on perfection and editing. The little imperfections are what make the album unique. She's saying "F*** you, I don't need that editing. I got my own pipes."

SamJ 8,008
I agree to some extent. I think sinners prayer is mixed perfectly though and Diamond Heart. I would say an example of the rough harsh vocals would be on John Wayne, where I wish more editing would have been done to make it softer sounding. But I thoroughly enjoy the record anyway so I dont want to moan too much.
The Surrealist 27,470
I kind of love it when it's this "messy".
Red 97,978
The vocals are "unedited" cause it makes sense for them to be so, it would be weird to have instrumentals with guitars, pianos, and so and robotic autotuned vocals, as it would be weird to have raw vocals in an EDM track. If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.
AlexanderLevi2 5,849
I love the vocals this way It sounds so real and not electronic beep boo bops (aka Justin Bieber) Currently listening to Joanne
witchcocktor 1,438
I think you can get used to it. If you have a tendency to listen to music with extremely edited, filtered, corrected, processed and tuned vocals (not that that's necessarily bad!!), anything that is not sounds harsh. You have a point, of course, but I haven't noticed any of the vocal imperfections that you mentioned. Maybe because I listen to some indie/folk music with vocalists that deliver with their unique, raw sound rather than with a completely clean, imperfect vocals. Or maybe because it's because I have no idea about vocals and notes in general.
REALITY 76,234
I can see what you're saying, but if anything I think it just adds to the overall meaning and experience of the album. She's always been a huge advocate for you know, actual talent in the music industry. It's a statement, and I think she executed it perfectly. The music itself is also raw and authentic, so her more raw and powerful vocals made sense in this case. 🦠🧙♀️🥀📸🎉👻🕺🧟💊💖☎️🔪👤🐺🌱🌎

I sure agree with that, autotune can sometimes make a track awesome, just listen to Poker Face, So Happy I Could Die, Cher's Believe, Kesha in general... Gabi 685
there is autotune on the album, yes sir, like the first 'Girl.." in joanne
Killa 17,458
The problem is that the industry makes everyone has this crazy standards about how the voice sounds. I don't like the voice that much, she seems to have spent too much time singing in the studio and probably got vocally tired. Cause she had a much fresher voice last year. Cheek to cheek is unfiltedred and there's no signs of her having difficulty in breathing etc. It's great, i applaud her record label and Gaga. Both were very brave. We need this or people won't know how to sing in the future

SEXODUS 5,927
I'm glad she didn't use so many filters with Joanne, it fits perfectly with the way it's meant to sound personal and truthful. Think of how brave this is, actually, in a business where if nobody used autotune or whatever they do to voices in order for them to sound acceptable we wouldn't have this many (forgettable) singers on the market (who live sound like cats being tortured).
